Last weekend, Adelaide techno/house fans were lucky enough to see UK techno/house sensation Paolo Mojo perform at Bunka due to a last minute cancellation of one of his scheduled Aussie tour dates. Presented by Sly City Nights, a mix of the finest Adelaide underground DJs on supported including Trav Bell, The Subjekts ( Sonny Fodera and Jorge Watts ), Alex McKenzie and Nic Borrelli.

There were already a healthy number of fans in attendance as I arrived at Bunka, a club adjoined to the Austral Hotel on the East end. My first time here, this club has been hosting a selection of techno/house nights regularly and boasted an industrial warehouse sense with high ceilings, modern décor with a cosy intimate feel. I felt right at home, as I greeted the friendly techno regulars.

The first supporting DJ Trav Bell, was spinning his deep techy underground goodness behind the decks easing the crowd into it, with The Subjekts hot on his heels. I always look forward to seeing this duo strut their stuff and again they both nailed it. Delighting the growing crowd with funky infused beats including soon to be released track Mirage on Blockhead Recordings, it’s hard to resist a dance. Following on were Alex McKenzie and Nic Borrelli going back to back, continuing the housey tech flavour, adding an upbeat sound into the night. Three sets from some of the finest Adelaide has to offer was just pure quality. I was pretty much satisfied at this point but there was of course more to come.

Paolo Mojo is known for delivering unexpected sets mixing in an array of different sounds. This time we saw a mixture of minimal techno infused with a tribal edge creating a sexy alluring feeling. His fans were keen to see him perform with many approaching him during his set, asking for photos and having a chat. Paolo didn’t seem to mind, being the humbled, nice guy that he is, but I thought it was a bit inappropriate. Let the man play! That’s what he’s here for. The night turned into a raunchy display with one young lady dancing topless, until reprimanded by the security – much to the male patron’s disgust! Paolo played till close bringing his sound up towards the end, giving his fans a full dose of his abundant talent.

Bunka was definitely appropriate for the genre presented here tonight. The friendly Adelaide techno crew certainly know how to party creating a fantastic atmosphere that saw an enjoyable night for all. Head down for the next instalment of local techno goodness with Tech-Phonics at The Crown Sceptre this Saturday 30th May 8pm till late. All sets were also recorded and will be available for download.
