Bootleg – possibly one of the coolest nights in Perth has turned three, so to celebrate the Bootleg Brothers got together some of Perth’s finest DJ talent, and threw a massive party at Ambar.

Moflo Leigh was on the decks when I arrived, playing some down tempo beats to defrost and warm up the room. His set progressed from hip hop to dubstep which was well received by the growing number of punters in the club. Not wanting to stay on one genre for too long Moflo Leigh moved onto some funky breaks and then dropped a tasty Take Me Out booty followed by some Crazy In Love from Beyonce. Once Moflo Leigh and his awesome beard were done warming up the room it was Destination? operators the Signal Drivers turn.

Opening their set with an electro booty of Love Lockdown by Kayne West, the Signal Drivers built up the energy until playing some crazy arse jackin’ electro beats that had the floor heaving. Booties of tracks like Satisfaction, Insane in the Membrane, Use Somebody, New Years Day all played in a variety of styles from electro and breaks to uplifting house and fidget.

Then came the moment we had all be waiting for, the Bootleg Brothers otherwise known as Ben Mac and Phil Blunt took to the wheels of steel met by whistles and cheers as women and men alike threw their underwear at the boys…well maybe not quite throwing their underwear but you get the idea. They played a whole variety of styles signature to the Bootleg nights. Some of the songs that I somehow managed to take note of on the frantic dance floor were a High Friend/Star69 mashup, Ghosts N Stuff breaks remix, Ring Ring Ring by De La Soul and all I had on my notepad was “awesome horns”, so a song with awesome horns I guess. The crowd reaction was also great with everyone dancing around and having fun and generally just going completely insane.

Once the Bootleg Brothers descended from the booth Micah took stage; unfortunately I was unable to stay for his set but from all accounts he smashed it, playing breaks and DnB.

The wicked line up for Bootleg’s third birthday, and awesome tunes made this night a major winner. The crowd was fairly large, and the insanity on the dance floor eventually drove me to take regular breaks on the plentiful couches at Ambar. My only disappointment was the scant amount of funky hip hop/breaks mashups – I wanted more! That said I still left Ambar with a big stupid grin on my face. Happy birthday Bootleg!
