Behind a saloon full of Friday regulars, thrill-seekers heard a (not so) distant calling from Miss Libertine’s mysterious back room. Despite the thematic title, an unexpecting crowd fell into a black hole of breakbeats and warbling hip-hop. A jamming crowd multiplied hour by hour as the beats were so contagious. Citizen vs. Flip were there as we entered, preparing for takeoff with tech-beats and fluid hard-as vocals which transcended too.

Not long after, yet light-years away in sound, Deviant had transported us to a tantric cyber space. With a climax induced by highly dramatic, robotic “O Fortuna” which entwined with speeding Indian chants to Drum n’ Bass magic. Deviant knew the art of suspense and release, as machine gun build-ups dropped to deep bold breaks. Dancing around in lab coats and goggles, it was quite possible some rocket scientists in the room had allowed Deviant to drop a mind-altering spillage of substance going straight to the ears.

Rock Like This’ free-party chemical exploration proved to be an unorthodox rave where even glo-sticks made an appearance beneath stellar DJs whose music was all things funky and experimental.

From beginning to end, the floor was nothing less than populated and ever-shakin’. Aware of the martian/spaceman dress code or not, everyone had the opportunity to participate in extra-terrestrial fantasy. Those adorned in aluminium foil, astronaut jackets and smothered in metallic paint were united with surrounding comets, fluorescent starlight and silver spread from wall to wall. UV Lights assisted our trip into outer space, and the welcoming encounter with Opiuo and MC Sed.

“Who’s ready for some chunk?” the MC repeated to a receptive audience, soon to crater the floor with endless shuffling as Opiuo’s crunk made a giant leap for mankind. The MC described his following as ‘cats on the dancefloor’ – who remained pressed to the groove in a dark realm of time travel. The sounds Opiuo exuded were ambience, funk, bopping glitch and everything in between squeezed into milliseconds of each innovative tune. No wonder gravity was easily defied on the dancefloor.

If you dare escape the music, the words you heard came from MissLib’s clientele: “I Can’t believe something so awesome was free!” – yes, it was the gathering that united astronaut DJs with earth kids and even a moon walking barman. Mr. Oizo’s Flat Beat had orbited around at least three times by the end of the night, allowing each act to reinvent the signature sound in waves of break-beat, dub and Drum+Bass.

Ghostbusters made a haunting reappearance with ANDY HOFFMAN who applied a bit of strobing electro to the scene. Hoffman did everything and anything, deliberately weaving solar system-themed tunes such as Out Of Space giving a very heavy reggae edge to the night.

Miss Libertine’s Victorian-terrace venue had everyone enthusiastic, you were wrong to think you would ever escape the rich glitch that pumped through restrooms and onto the veranda. As the club began to dismantle itself before the sunrise, we remained on the flipside – parlour style. Smoking and hearing Hoffmann’s distant spacey breaks from the outdoor boombox – we now felt the return of gravity after a successful journey to outerspace.
