After back to back sell out nights at Capitol for their last tour in October of last year, the trio of Bliss n Eso had moved to the much larger Metro City. The doors opened and it was like every punter was there at once as the line rounded the corner of the once troubled nightspot, the hooded hip hop lovers were out en masse anticipating a cracking show. The crowd got settled inside, with tributes flowing to the late Michael Jackson and, although it wasn’t clear whether the show was sold out it, it certainly felt like it was.
Obese Records head-honcho Pez kicked the night off, with crowd favourites including The Festival Song, showing the audience that they had a night coming up that they would remember for a long time.
The trio consisting of DJ Izm, and MCs Esoterik and Bliss hit the stage with the intent to show the Perth crowd that they are at the top of their game. With a large screen counting down the trio’s entrance, the Perth crowd went absolutely nuts. The opening hit of Woodstock 2008 sent the crowd into a bouncing frenzy with the trio really seeming to enjoy their time here in Perth and the crowd certainly reciprocated.
The night took a theme of relevance to the world around us and the want and need to make the most of what we have. With words of Peace, Love and Unity a focus of the night, they brought attention to real political issues that the culture of hip hop is based on. The trio wanted to promote acceptance, multiculturalism and peace and it was embraced by the adoring crowd.
The encore was no doubt the highlight of their show. Crowd favourites The Sea Is Rising and On Tour had the place bouncing from wall to wall and with an abundance of hooded partygoers singing and dancing; Metro’s was pumping. The mood all over the joint was vibrant. The two MCs took half of the stage each splitting the crowd in half, chanting party over, f*uck you over there. This bumped up the tempo of the set before a final assault on the crowd of “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie”.
Australian hip hop is making a statement to the rest of the Aussie music scene in a big way. The Sydney based Bliss n Eso certainly dealt a pack full of aces at their recent show in Perth and taping for a future DVD release will be a testament to that very fact.
