As Saturday night rolled around I figured it was about time to make my leisurely stroll through the valley and over to Moonbar for the night’s gig. Arriving in the thick of an already energetic crowd, DJ Bacon kicked the night off with some rolling beats matched perfectly to some street themed visuals by Dilate. DJ Bacon got the crowd to bounce with some early ‘90s hip hop, showing off his fine turntable skills through with sharp cuts, scratching and juggling. Peppering the set were big breaks along with snippets of Daft Punk’s Around the World and even a drop of Brass Monkey from The Beastie Boys, clearly showing this crew can turn it out.
Shift-T is also someone to take note of, with lightning-quick cuts and scratching so precise they can rip holes in space and time. Shift–T’s slick breaks dominated the dance floor with memorable cutting, sampling and scratching which also posed a question in my mind – what would a turntable battle be like between DJ Bacon and Shift –T? Immense, no doubt.
Let’s move onto Danielsan who instantly brought out the the funk, coaxing the crowd to slip on their boogie shoes and party with him. Following this up with some electro and 303 laced goodness, we were all well into the night’s festivities.
Throughout the night all the guys were doing really well despite some technical difficulties and recovered every time however as Danielsan’s fine collection of funk was a lot of older vinyl the issues were becoming more apparent and it was time for some action. In fine DJ form Danielsan kept playing whilst taking the decks on, samurai style and within the first half an hour of his set he was switched over to a new turntable set up.
Hitting the fresh decks, Danielsan flew out with Curtis Mayfield’s Pusherman, causing more people flooded the Moonbar. One thing I paid close attention to on the night was the ability of this DJ to read a crowd, I watched Danielsan monitor quickly a large selection of records every time prior to dropping them in his mix showing his true skill as a DJ.
When I heard Rock Creek Park play I gladly put my hands up in the air and as I looked around I wasn’t alone as this seemed to re-energise the crowd and set the pace for some more of Danielsan’s disco, electro and funk rarities. Couple his deft choice of tracks with skillful scratching and breaks and there was no stopping the dance floor frenzy that Danielsan created. As he finished his set with a sample of “doing it for the disco king” I thought that he clearly deserved that title.
And there we have it! Tonight was definitely a frenzy full of party breaks, funky beats and dancing and I would thoroughly recommend you check out a night of Shifty’s Dump if you ever get the chance. Fun is guaranteed.
