Dubstep, drum n bass and breaks? It was the holy freakin’ trinity for this reviewer. The weekly Friday night Lokal gig over at Bar 138 was bound to be good fun, however the venue also has an advantage of having a great open bar atmosphere, that wasn’t dampened (no pun intended) by the horrible winter weather.
Breaks dominated the night, with every now and then the tempo speeding up for some heavy drum and bass, and then slowing right down again for that crunchy, head bopping dubstep that has been taking over Perth in recent months. It is clear why these genres of music fit so well together, with each essentially having the same head bopping/swinging dance move just at different tempos.
Being a Friday night in the city, the crowd was a mix of bass aficionados and city folk looking for a sobering drink after a hard week’s work. It was fascinating to watch the two types of punters intermingle, with the hard devotees of music standing right up close to the DJ console, and the weary workers a few steps back. A clear and definite transition did occur however, (possibly due to the escalating alcohol level in the crowd’s blood), where the everyday Joe’s, begun to finally feel the groove and before long it was hard to distinguish the groups they had converged so swiftly.
Overall, Lokal was a fun evening to kick off the weekend. The music was great, the atmosphere jovial, and it was an all ‘round great gig and a good time out.
