The Club Club night down Laundry way on a Saturday night is a pretty popular place. Most weeks you have a solid local lineup, or a handy international to enjoy. Sometimes though, you get two tasty internationals to sink your metaphorical teeth into. Saturday was one such scrumptious offering; Henry Saiz: a man on the rise as one of the up and coming names on the EDM scene, alongside Hybrid an act that continues to be at the cutting edge of its genre with critical acclaim never too far away. Get out the popcorn kids; this had fun written all over it.
Arriving with a handy entourage for the night’s festivities, the line outside raised the prospect of it being yet another hot, sweaty and steamy session inside. We walked in to find Club Junque warming the Cave nicely as he always does, laying down a nice foundation of undulating beats and an incessant rhythm, keeping us cruising nicely until Saiz took over at the helm, our ship in safe hands. And when he did, it was smooth smooth sailing.
It was a set chock full of the smooth almost uplifting melodies that the Saiz has become renowned for, but with driving bass lines backing it up to keep you wanting more. His work behind the decks was bloody impressive, and like a Spanish captain directing an armada, technically it was hard to fault. While all the people that had come to socialise perhaps stayed in the ‘Laundry’ room or ventured upstairs into the Courtyard, those who had come to get their groove on were smack back where they needed to be: the Cave. It made for a much more enjoyable and user-friendly experience than some may have been worried about. The Saiz juggernaut rolled on, although with only ninety minutes afforded to him, it was always going to be a touch short – but he damn well made the most of it. His own Lady In The Mirror was one of many highlights, but it was the last twenty minutes of his set that for me, was just something else altogether. Ending in his absolutely smashing remix of Lamur from Guy J, it was melody-infused techno at some of its finest, and while it might be simple to describe music in this way, it was so damn ‘nice’.
As Saiz left the control room, ripples of excitement filled the room. Our new captain was about to take us in a slightly different, but equally enjoyable direction. The spinnaker up, things went up a notch, and we sailed away on a cruise that had a little bit for everyone. From progressive breaks to some seriously glitchy techno, and everything in between, it was a whole lot of fun. For the next two hours, the Cave was rocking in a big way, eager punters lapping up all the delights he was putting down like crazed hungry piranhas. The driving was relentless; the rhythm: contagious. A twisted up remix of Porcelain from Moby early on, to a Killer Appplikation from Malente a little later on, scattered amongst the scenery of absolute monsters like Hybrid’s own Finished Symphony and finishing with their remix of Clubbed To Death from erstwhile Aussie Rob Dougan, it was awesome.
As the house lights came on, all aboard were left gasping for air and as we looked around, it was pretty obvious that we’d all experienced something pretty special. Two quality acts albeit with very different styles, complementing each other in a big way, in the same room, in an intimate club setting, and to an appreciative crowd that knew the score. All sorts of win.
