While Yuksek’s visit to Canberra came on a rather gloomy Sunday, I fought off the urge to stay inside and hit up Lot 33 to check out the French maestro.

After grabbing a drink and sitting down for a moment I didn’t realise the man himself had taken the stage but after a slowish warm up the set very quickly had me smiling from ear to ear as badly danced around. Tracks from the new album featured heavily with the new single Tonight making the punters lose their collective shit.
My highlight would have to have been the excellent mix of Metronomy’s Heartbreaker. The set was dominated by big guitar driven sounds reminiscent of Soulwax live shows. Big bass lines certainly kept me happy and dancing the whole time. Intense sections would seamlessly morph into mellow high hat dominated breakdowns which could lull you into thinking that something more chilled was going to be played, but no, Yuksek would then explode into another pumping section giving you no break and force you to keep dancing. The guy definitely knows how to put a party on and that he did.

I’m not sure whether he was doing it on purpose just to keep the crowd on their toes but at one stage I had to actually block my ears to drown a little of the screeching coming out of the speakers. I, admittedly, was so close I could have touched him so maybe it was just me.

My one gripe was that although myself and the people around me (going on the looks on their faces) were having an excellent time, not once did Yuksek crack a smile or even go so far as to acknowledge this fact. He’s either ridiculously chilled out or is really bored with what he’s doing or perhaps he’d just partied a little too hard after his Splendour set and was feeling like I did on Monday. I’ve decided to go with the latter.

Biggie and Bobbin then came on to wrap the night up superbly. As a previous non-fan, or maybe just someone who didn’t know yet, I am now decidedly pretty into dark, grimey techno. The set was excellent and had the remaining crowd, understandably yet disappointingly small on a school night, jumping.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
