Another year, another ITM 50 poll! After a month of hard partying the Sony inthemix50 tour was set to finish off with a bang at one of my favourite local nights, Interview. This Interview was made more special with the announcement of an all girl DJ line-up showcasing the creme de la creme of the femmes! So off it was to Miss Libertine in the CBD to check out the action.
While I was familiar with quite a few of the girls on the lineup I only knew Melbourne stalwart Disko Pussy by reputation so I was particularly keen to see how she went. Tickled Pink residents Nikki and Danni B respectively were providing some nice techno tunes to get the main room proceedings started and had a good crowd early on dancing and chatting away. As accomplished as they both are I found it hard keep my attention focused on them as Virginia Le was playing a bit of an old-school themed set in the front room.
With progressive trance classics such as For An Angel, Reach Out, Beachball and My Lexicon amongst others it was good to hear some of the less overplayed old tunes alongside the fan favourites and it was as much fun talking about the tunes with a friend and trying to guess what was coming next while dancing away. It seemed to be one of those sets where it’s all about the tunes and not the mixing though, because, well there wasn’t really any most of the time!
By 1AM the main room crowd was ready for their Pussy fix but had to wait a little longer as Mischief took the reigns and took us in the direction of deep prog. I think it was a great example of building a set up and using the time well, it was a pretty sweet journey from the deeper to the more banging progressive with bits of techno spread throughout. The crowd had built up a bit by now and were loving it with a few favourites unknown to me getting good reactions. Freya followed up surprisingly and continued the deep progressive tech vibes. With no set times printed throughout the venue I put on my Colombo trench coat that I keep handily around and discovered Disko Pussy had called in sick that morning and wasn’t going to make it. I was a bit disappointed as I was looking forward to seeing her as I’m sure many others were and it would have been nice if there was some warning or update.
Despite the setback there was nothing left for me to but dance! It was more difficult than I thought it would be though as by 3:30 I was pretty over the tech/prog and wanted some more banging trance from Freya like I’ve heard her play before, but didn’t get it. Even Jewelz coming on at 4AM took her time to get to something a bit more exciting so luckily Chrissie Ferrer had something a bit more uplifting and melodic happening at the front and Freefall by Nu-NRG had me getting my Jesus pose on.
As 5AM rolled around it was time for me to drag my legs away from the venue. As with all Interview parties they had done a good job decking the place out for the night, with banners and ze tapestriez hanging around and top notch lights and visuals. The centrepiece was a mad giant smilie face with FRICKEN LASER BEAMS SHOOTING OUT OF IT’S EYES!!! It was a great job! With some equally great people and good tunes I had fun as usual but with the headline act not making it and my desires of driving trance bliss unfulfilled I couldn’t help but feel slightly let down a little inside so I waved goodbye to the inthemix50 tour, still chasing that elusive (Disko) Pussy…
