Retek, a mainstay of techno in Perth said goodbye to one of its promoters Lee last weekend. I managed to arrive at 11pm and caught the end of D.One’s set. Unfortunately the downstairs room at Bar Open was a bit empty with only a couple of die hards and early birds dropping in to wish Lee the best of luck before heading out to other things.

D.One played a good warm up set, not too hard, not to light – it was just like this cereal I had once. I enjoyed the tunes from the bar while I soaked up the surroundings. BarOpen is a pretty cosey venue, with plenty of lounges, cool artwork on the walls and even cooler bar staff. There is also camo netting and what appeared to be hydro foil hanging from the ceiling. My only qualm with this particular venue is that men of a tall build like myself don’t fit under the roof at the urinal – so you are guaranteed to hit the roof with the back of your head at one point during the evening.

But enough about Bar Open, D.One finished up and gave way for the man of the hour Lee. At the start he was careful not to belt it out to hard just yet, as people slowly began to fill the room. Playing more of what I would describe as rolling tech, the tempo gradually picked up filling the floor until he worked his way to some banging techno. At the risk of sounding like a bit of a fiddler, the gradual build in Lee’s set was excellent and before I knew it I was bouncing away on the dancefloor.

By the time Lee finished up there was a respectable crowd in the club and his descent from the booth was met with cheers from the crowd. Puff kept things pumping with some Detroit sounding Techno – which pleasantly surprised me and was well received by the lubricated crowd on the dance floor.

I had a good time at Retek: the music is great, and Bar Open has a friendly communal vibe about it. So if you are after the banging tech beats then stop tweaking those knobs get out of your bedroom and check out what Retek has to offer.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
