The Likes Of You have been throwing some great parties recently and bringing out the names that a lot of people want to see. When this particular party was announced a few months ago, it got a lot of people excited. With Audion, Oxia, Omar S and Dubfunk, it was destined to be large!
I got there at about 1am and the place was already heaving to Gavin Keitel. I settled myself in by having a bit of a boogie to him he always does a stellar job of the warm up set.
At about 1:30am, i made my way upstairs to see Ben Cromack. It had been ages since i had seen him and like a lot of others, i think he is one of Australia’s best DJs. The dancefloor was rammed and it was going off tap! It was proper loopy techno with a bit of Technotronic in there. I like how he constructed the set by building it up hard and then dropping it back a bit. It was great to hear techno played like that, he is always on it.
When he finished we headed downstairs to catch Oxia. I like some of his productions so I was curious to see what he would play. He started on the house tip but it was still techno, big dancefloor friendly tunes. There was lots of horns and whistles but then got a bit deeper towards the end. To be honest he kind of lost me towards the end as it was a bit too samey. Finishing with Domino was very well received!
So I ventured upstairs again to catch Omar S, I must admit I hadn’t heard anything about him before, but he came highly recommend. Starting on the acid/house tip it was very enjoyable. He then moved to a slightly electro sound. The sound was probably the best in this room.
One of the things that i enjoyed most about Omar S was the variety of music and tracks he played, just as i noted he was playing ‘electro’, he changed it all up and played some nice vocal house tunes.
However, it was now time for Audion. It was definitely on the darker tip but there is just something about a live set that’s special. There was lots of layering and I always find it interesting to contrast a minimal set you’d listen to at home to hearing the same thing in a club. I loved the real techy elements to it. It was the definite highlight for me. Mouth to Mouth was huge!
Towards the end of the night we moved to the rooftop smoking area and Mike Callendar and Safari were about to start playing.
My last DJ for the night was Dubfunk. I’d heard many good reports and I was glad I was finally able to see him. As with a few other South American’s, he plays deep driving prog and very well! The crowd was still rocking when i pulled up stumps at about 7am. Another large solid party from The Likes Of You, can’t wait for the next one!
