When I normally think of art shows, you’d imagine people slowly walking around a room, silently feigning appreciation for the work on the walls. But as I entered the sidebar of the Rosemount last Thursday, which had been converted into a funky space packed with enthused people, I got a completely different impression.

This was an art show of a different kind. With the DJ spinning some crazy deep minimal house, the beer taps were flowing and the crowd was alive with chatter and mingling. An adjoining room had been converted into a gallery, with local artists’ typography, photography and graphic design prints hanging from clothes pegs around the room for sale. There was also some jewellery and clothes for sale around as well. I was quite impressed with some of the prints, which went to show the talent that some of the young people of Perth have.

I think that the idea of Serif is long overdue. It brings together fashion and art appreciation and packages it in a format that younger generations can enjoy. Not to mention the DJing, which was funky and provided a cool soundtrack to the night. I managed to speak to one of the promoters briefly, who explained that the next instalment of this once a month show would showcase not only more of the local visual artistic talent, but that a line-up of elite Perth DJ’s (including the likes of Micah) would be laying down some mad tunes in a massive 4 hour back-to-back set.

Every month is themed and the space is transformed to suit. This time everything that wasn’t bolted down was covered in bubble wrap and taped with fragile signage as if to be shipped. This provided a tactile experience that appealed to everyone’s inner 5 year old including myself, who must have popped 50% of those suckers at one of the tables. I will definitely be back next month to support Perth’s talent and progress our cultural identity. Definitely one to check out in the coming months.
