Faithful tech followers were spoilt on Sunday night as Democracy celebrated their second birthday at Geisha nightclub. Democracy imported two of the finest tech jockeys, Oxia and Audion, with support from local tech gal, Nina Van Dyke, to tantalise the people’s tech buds. It definitely wasn’t a conventional move by the promoter to have the gig on a Sunday, however the turn out was just shy of 200 as the loyal followers broke all the rules by coming out on a Sunday for the love of techno.

Doors opened at 8 pm and Nina started the vibes by introducing rhythmic tribal beats as she spun out her first track that was the Afrilounges’ Lovely remix of Redskin, by Laipin’s under the Budenzaubar Label. By this time, there was a steady trickle of punters arriving. Nina then progressed into the funky tech house zone to warm up the dance floor by tightly mixing tracks such as, Maybe Means Yes by Sllash & Doppe, and Long Way To Go by Audiofly and Alex Flitsch. As her set was ending, Nina welcomed the first import by dropping Vincent Thomas’, Let It Burn featuring Avalon, as her final tune.

After Nina’s engaging set, Frenchman Olivier Raymond, who performs under the alias Oxia, was the first import on show. Oxia is renowned for his groovy style of programming and his set for the punters lived up to that reputation as he wasted no time by pumping out tech house tracks that instantly permeated a sexy atmosphere into the room. There was no doubt his set got the punters going as almost everyone was on the dance floor, moving and grooving in their own styles to Oxia’s sounds. He dropped Till Von Sein’s, Ovas, the Catz N Dogz remix, which is a personal favourite, and Cabaret, by iO, released under Diynamic. After two hours of pure sex and chunky bass lines, Oxia left his post for the other protagonist.

Audion, AKA Matthew Dear’s alter ego, was the next player up to entertain the crowd. Audion is known for his quality productions that he has contributed to the genre, therefore, the room was filled with much anticipation for Audion’s live set as most of the folks who showed up that night were there to see him in the flesh and hear him live. Audion started hard and accompanied his set with custom visuals that were unfortunately tucked away on the far right hand side of the stage. Since he performed live, there was no trainspotting for the chin strokers as he used loops and samples that bestowed originality to his set. He played hard and it got even harder in the final thirty. He ended his set on a thumping note, leaving the room with a pumped up atmosphere that could inflate any flat tyre.

The show eventually had to end, however it was obvious that the crowd wanted more as big sighs were exhaled when the ‘reality’ lights came on at 12 am. After exiting Geisha, the people were left pondering about their next move as the words on everyone’s lips were, ‘Where’s the after party at?’. All in all, the night was epic and Democracy celebrated their 2nd birthday with true style as they show cased two very different, yet sensational sets that had the people on the floor and enthusiastically bouncing to the tech beats on a Sunday!

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
