Saturday @ Family presents Dolls In The House was the sequel to the previous all-female night The Dolls House – a collection of Australia’s finest female DJs doing their tricks behind the turntables. Following the success and popularity from the last Dolls House, Queensland’s top music venue decided to do it all again and hand the headphones to the fairer gender for the night.
Although there was a small delay in the main room waiting for the FTV Diamond Model Awards to finish, once Monique Unique got started, all lost time was soon made up. Plunging the floor into some solid tracks including some remixes of Kings Of Leon and Mark Morrison, had the crowd kicking off early; getting the dance floor packed out before 11PM. This was probably the earliest I have ever seen Family’s main room dancefloor full on a non-ticketed event.
Following Monique was Lux, playing a well chosen selection of electro and house, which the crowd responded to very well. Family’s famed LED lights gave a range of effects through the night, starting off with some simple designs for the earlier DJs to a wide array of colours and patterns for the headliners. This really set off the existing lighting well, creating a spectacular atmosphere and making sure everyone was watching the turntables and the gorgeous femme fatales operating them. Meanwhile, up in Uncle, its usual winning formula of smoke and sex was throwing down all the anthems we love. Guest DJs included Melbourne’s Kaysh and Sydney’s Anna Lunoe. There’s something humbling about being so close to the DJ when in The Pod; it really gets the crowd excited about the music – and this night was proving to be no exception.
Back on The Main Stage. Pioneer PRO DJ 2009 winner DJ Playmate unleashed her tracklist at midnight, showing a smooth undertone of funk through all of her set. This really got the floor shoulder to shoulder with the crowd loving the beats and the mixes. The sounds were infectious from here on in. You couldn’t help but dance to the rhythmic blend of dirty house. Keli Hart took up the headphones next. Set to release her all female production label The Dolls House Ms Hart injected a shot of Ibiza into the room, bringing in some techno elements with plenty of skill and showcasing exactly why she is called the “Sound of Sydney.” I for one, couldn’t keep away from the floor.
Disko Diva played nicely for the warm down set, putting in the big room house that’s always needed for the late run. The long build-ups and breaks paired with favourites like Bring The Noise and Dizzee Rascal set the scene, which the punters responded to in force. This kept the stomping ground shoulder to shoulder right up to close.
I was one of many walking out at close with that tired but satisfied look on my face. I was left with confidence that the all female line-up can not only mix with the boys, but probably wipe the floor with them. And of course it helps that they’re prettier too.
