Trance brand NEXUS is known for regularly putting on banging trance events in a variety of interesting little venues! Besides their own impressive local talent, the Nexus team have brought us Mike Nichol and Lumeria. Tonight, the crew gave us a two hour set by superstar DJ, producer, and remixer: Ronski Speed! Also Emma Hewitt sang live vocals to her new single with Ronski, which was recorded on video at the event!
The venue for the evening was cozy little Miss Libertine in the CBD. Simply by sheer numbers, the event was a huge success. It was completely sold out, with only a measly 10 tickets on the door, which went astoundingly quickly. The club was non-stop busy and pumping till very late, with a friendly crowd all having a good time! Visuals consisted of two lasers, green and pinkish purple, along with screens playing visualizers, including an interesting video of an injection, and one of an octopus.
A few things I really enjoyed; the trance was playing in the toilets too, rather than random toilet music! Also cheap drink specials, especially agwa shots, which made for more than a few funny drunken moments!
Miss Lib’s was hot and pretty packed when I arrived around 11:50. The outdoor porch, front room, and main back room were all already busy and more than slightly humid. I managed to catch the end of Aaron Camz set, which sounded awesome, had the whole room dancing. He finished impressively with Unprepared, by Marco V (who is not coming to Melbourne Nov 6)!
Next, Trent McDermott went into a brilliant warm up set; really good techy trance, and some awesome basslines. By 1AM the place was completely packed and felt like a sauna! A few fans or ventilating windows would have been welcomed, I think! Standout songs from Trent’ss set were Wippenberg’s Chakalaka, and Marco V’s Stimulated 2010! By the end of the hour, Miss Libs was also hot with anticipation for Ronski’ss set!
I did not leave the dance floor even once during the next two hours, though the driving tunes kept the hot and sweaty bodies moving, continuing to further steam up the venue. Ronski held the room enthralled. His mixing was very good, not a beat wrong anywhere, and his track choices left the crowd in continual suspense, wondering which opening melody or bassline we would hear next! I especially enjoyed that he played several interesting mashups or unusual remixes I wouldn’t normally have heard anywhere else!! Above and Beyond’s Lonely Girl and Ronski’s own track Black Sun stood out, as did Sin City by Dakota. For me, the highlight of the set, however, was his own new single Lasting Light, during which Emma Hewitt sang vocals! Finally, Ronski finished up with Markus Schulz’s mashup of The Space We Are and Rex Mundi’s Perspective.
