“The mother fuckin’ *Gaslamp Killer*” all the way from LA, dropped what can only be described as a killer debut set in Brisbane Saturday night, supported by Sydney DJ guest Elgusto (Hermitude) and with a line up of Brisbane-based Djs, showcasing some of the heaviest underground electronic beats.
Held in the main room on the ground floor of the Step Inn, the newly acquired venue made a massive difference to their gigs generally held upstairs in the smaller venue. Having presented big names such as Flying Lotus, Starkey, The Bug, Joker, Coki & Loefah and Blu & Exile, The Gaslamp Killer (GLK) was definitely one to add to the collection and not miss out on. The evening was bound to have a smashing turnout before the show with 90 tickets already sold and over a hundred more estimated to turn up on the door. The mad rush for tickets came about two hours before GLK’s appearance with a perpetual stream of fans filling the room in no time at all. The air-conditioning was faulty however and you instantly hit a wall of body heat and flying sweat once you pushed your way into the crowd.
The evening got off to a good start with *Dank Morass*’ very own Danck, spinning a collection of dusty beats consisting of new age hip hop and jazz samples, flawlessly mixed with 45rpm records for his opening set.
Followed by Syntax (Speaker Wrath) who often plays with the Dank Morass crew played some heavier hip hop and dubstep, setting the stage for Brisbane guest Tigermoth.
He brought a lot of energy to the night and got the crowd loose as people started coming in. Syntax reverted from his darker style of dubstep for the evening and dropped some J Dilla tunes and raw hip hops beats, including a little futuristic hip hop for an easy transition onto Tigermoth’s live set.
Ethereal is how Tigermoth describes his new album ‘Underwater beats’ but not his live act Saturday. Having never played with Dank Morass, Tigermoth played a live set that varied with Chaos pad glitching to just throwing some of his latest songs at us, as well as previewing his upcoming album on the night. His original hip hop beats were a definite contrast to the music generally played at most Dank nights but was a perfect blend of hip hop and dubstep that kept the evening varied for the most varied artist performing later.
Then everything abruptly cut off when Science Project came on stage. Popular in Brisbane, the duo got a lot of excitement as they set up. With Andrew on the drums and Jad working the MPC, their set comprised of the general flowing theme of dubstep and hip hop beats but with their own original flare and two live MCs on stage with them that were not necessary and did nothing for the music. Fortunately Science Project’s beats overrode the disappointing vocal element and played some of their recent new singles like Dr. Shakalu and Jelly Monster.
Next up Elgusto (one half of Hermitude), all the way from Sydney supported the lead up to the Gaslamp Killer from 12 up until he arrived, playing a two-disk set, dropping some of his very own chest rattling beats, as well as some heavy tunes throughout his set, mixing Aphex Twin’s Windowlicker in amongst some J Dilla and Hudson Mohawke throughout his basic DJ set. Elgusto’s wobbly, experimental hip hop was an effective introduction for the Killer Saturday night.
Then a mass of people began flooding the floor for Gaslamp. Known for his outrageously diverse Dj sets, no one could even begin to expect what he was about to play that night. The crowd became wild with excitement as GLK (Brainfeeder/Low End Theory Club) appeared on stage just after one. His set didn’t include any tracks from his 2009 EP My Troubled Mind, however it contained the most varied music that no other artist but Gaslamp would be able to chuck together as effectively. Intermixing Jimmy Hendrix with some of the new Flying Lotus Cosmogramma (to be released May 2 2010), he also threw in some Chase & Status and 16bit before stirring things up with a Nine Inch Nails song and kicking in a little Zomby. He effortlessly kept his entire set incredibly heavy and effectively diverse pushing an insane amount of energy behind the decks to keep the audience crazy throughout the entirety of his show.
The night didn’t end there however. Walrii of Dank Morass came on straight after GLK and kept the night heavy at the beginning spinning some Babylon System and sampling some of the new Bug tracks. The set later was later subdued with some Keaver & Brause and other soul samples.
Overall the night was incredibly well prepared and had an effective line-up that kept a stimulated audience of bass fiends hungry for the various set of heavy beats they provided Saturday night. Another thing worth mentioning would be the visuals following the evening’s vibe. Catering to the Djs distinct sinister undertones in their music, they had footage ranging from the Shining to Bill Hicks, playing with cartoons such as Thundercats and utilising a range of visual effects to make the night just that more incredible.
