Kryptic Mind’s Leon Switch dropped into Brisbane’s alloneword on Saturday afternoon, spreading the duo’s infectious dubstep across Australia’s east coast on their recent tour. The man with the cleanest, whitest shirt played the filthiest set for the evening, supported by local Brisbane DJ groups Rukus and Dank Morass.
The line-up began with Dank Morass’ very own Walrii and Swob kicking off the evening with some of their recognised beats and dubstep in the new venue. Generally featuring some absurd visuals by Archi Landcaster, the venue was itself a visual in itself, with drawings on all the walls illuminated by lights. The event began at 2pm, following up Dank Morass with Brisbane’s De La Maye from Rukus later into the afternoon.
De La Maye played a variety of music styles, ranging from liquid to dark drum and bass and ambient music. Her wave of party vibes was flawlessly mixed and she played notable tunes such as Minimal by Commix and Bear Music by Instra-Mental. The style of music she kept reverting to had more bass-heavy, emphasised synth progression, rather than generic drum work in the DnB genre. Her set overall had an incredibly positive effect on the crowd and more people started to crowd in to see the next two acts.
Guest DJ Same-O from Melbourne’s Too Much! played an epic lead-up set to Kryptic Minds, dropping heavy dubstep in the beginning, progressing into futuristic dubstep beats. He kicked the evening off from straight party music to something a lot darker and graduating, like a swelling applause up to the main event.
Then Kryptic Minds cut off all the music, starting his dramatic, slowly built-up introduction that kept escalating into darker, heavier dubstep. The venue’s acoustics made everything sound amazingly crisp and clear and Leon Switch eventually made the crowd more and more loose, until there was uncontrollable dancing from all angles of the venue. Highly anticipated songs Badman, One of Us, Six Degrees and Wondering Why were played, but he would first tease the audience’s expectations interestingly and effectively.
The night didn’t completely wind down after Leon Switch exited the stage, with Erther from Rukus finishing the early night off. This guy is timeless and his selection of music never ceases to amaze. Overall, the music line-up was an interesting mix of diverse DJs, catering to all with their differing styles.
