Out and about in Brisbane, whilst strolling past the D-Bar, curiousity got the better of myself and our crew and we decided to drop in and check out the order of the evening at the D-Bar…....

The D-Bar, adjacent to the Brisbane’s pub icon “Dooleys”, provides what many considered to be one of the most intimate and vibrant atmospheres in clubs/bars in the grand old “Valley” of Brisbane. Tonight the D-Bar played host to Flipside; an evening of fresh and funky breaks fused with D’n B delights. Upon entry, judging by revellers sharing a laugh around the dance floor, couches, bar and court yard, it was obvious that we were in for a fantastic night! One thing you could not help but notice was, which ever part of the bar you stood – everyone could not stop moving to the funked up beats that were being laid down by the Flipside crew!! With each track played you could sense that these guys really did know how to interpret the crowd, guaranteeing that plenty of punters would get their ass shakin’ fix!!

Flipside’s Mr Frost began proceedings around 9pm, laying down some lush break step ensuring those arriving would slowly ease into the warm vibe already filling the venue. With the pace picking up rapidly , Mr Frost’s smooth blend of wax, from the likes Koma & Bones – Morpheus(Meat Katie Rmx), Aquasky Vs Master Balsters – Master Blaster, and Melbourne based outfit Nubreed, did not disappoint! Bottom end mayhem was clearly the order of the night!

Stepping up to the platters next was Mr Bump taking things to the next level of funkdom! Mr Bump ensured tracks spun would allow the crowd to loose themselves out on the floor. Seamless blends of breaks, funk and other chunks from the likes of the Fingerlickin’, TCR and Skint stables were just the ticket. Even though the floor was in no way comparable in size to some other major venues in around the Valley area, people still created their own spaces and were able to shake their butt’s comfortably. Scoot then took charge of the moment and steered the flavour towards some dirty 2 Step & D’n B, pounding out tracks from the likes of D’n B giants Aphrodite, DJ TeeBee – April Dawn and an artist that rocks my world, DJ Marky – So Tinha. Beautifully orchestrated cuts and back- spins aptly teased those on the dance floor and coerced couples on the couches to promptly get up and dance!. The crowd embraced the change in tempo with open arms, as more and more faces began to filter into the now pumping D-bar!

Following on from Scoot was well known local maestro Aniki (Bottom Heavy@Strictly Business). Showing why he is so highly regarded here in Vegas, Aniki’s moved the sound more towards breaks with an awesome display of mixing & flury of tricks which kept the vibe flowing nicely. Dropping in tracks from the likes of Freq Nasty – That’s my style, Tipper – Tug of War and Two Live Crew’s classsic – Me So Horny, ensured we were certainly going nowhere else in a hurry!

Brisbane Talent Operon rounded off the night with a blistering set following on magically from Aniki. Pulsating D’n B delights from Dillinjah – Valve Sound, Sketch & Code – Brainstorm & Psychosis – Free Fall made sure punters grooved into the ealy hours past mid-night. Playing a combination of both dark and lighter edge sounds, Operon satsified the varying tastes amongst the D-Bar on the night! Given the size of the venue, the sound system more than catered for the ever pulsing bass-lines that defines both breaks and D’n B.

The street-side court yard allowed us to sit and talk amongst friends without the music proving to be so intrusive that we needed to bellow at the top of our lungs just to be heard!! The bar staff too, try as the might, could not resist the urge to let go and groove to the fine tunes that unfolded. It was such a pleasure to be served by friendly and proficiecient staff that could actually sling together a proper “fruit tingle” and pour a decent pot of ale!

Word of mouth once again proves that just when you thought you’ve seen all that is on offer here in Bisbane, along come night’s like Flipside, which tends to inject a much needed sense of variety for punters! Entry was free (donations were contributed to the crew to help cover costs such as the sound system), the staff were friendly, the atmosphere was electric, and most importantly, the music was just down right wicked! Can’t wait for the next one…..... fezzwah

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
