What was anticipated to be one of the biggest line-ups to hit Canberra’s Lot 33, proved to be nothing short of the truth. Saturday night saw the likes of Frenchman and genre-mixing extraordinaire, DJ Falcon; UK collaborating king, Trevor Loveys; as well as Australia’s own rising star Duncan, aka D Cup serve up a smorgasbord of tunes that had the punters dancing into the wee hours of the morning.
On arrival to the gig I was pleased with what I could see and hear – an intimate, friendly crowd with drinks in hands and smiles on faces, not to mention, the sounds of fresh, fun and danceable tunes. Put these together and what do you get? A damn good night out!
Taking to the decks was Sydney DJ, D Cup who performed an impressive set. He wound up the crowd into an absolute frenzy with an upbeat, swinging sound. The set was full of funky tunes and crunchy beats; some of which had a Justice influence. D Cup teased the punters with several samples of the hit single We Don’t Speak No Americano...not once, but twice, before a beautiful happy ending! Hands down it was a stellar set – what a way to begin!
After a fantastic warm-up set, it was time to turn up the heat. DJ Falcon stepped up to take the challenge. He busted out every cool tune under the sun and tweaked it with his French, Daft Punk Crew influence. The set was a myriad of anything and everything cool. He played electro anthems such as The Bloody Beetroots’ Warp and Daft Punk’s Digital Love and Robot Rock. Falcon also included some of his remix work, like French-pop Phoenix’s 1901 and Lisztomania. Some other interesting inclusions were Swedish rockers, The Hives’ Because I Wanna, Missy Elliott’s Work It, and a killer mix of Video Killed the Radio Star with MGMT’s Kids AND The Bloody Beetroots’ Butter. It was massive!
After such an amazing shake-up, it was time to bring the punters back down-to-earth, and there was no-one better than UK fidget house DJ Trevor Loveys to do the honours. His set featured some hip-hop influence, big beats and everything in-between. A good quality set that had the crowd dancing until dawn though I would have liked to have seen more.
Overall, it was an explosive evening at Lot 33. The Pang crew again proved themselves as the promoters who can deliver the latest and greatest in dance music. D Cup will be one to watch out for, as he certainly proved he was no amateur. And Falcon, well did he show that he was the man with all the tricks up his sleeve. Kudos to everyone that came out and played! Two thumbs up.
