The Easter long weekend is almost here. It’s one of those weekends in Melbourne that partygoers seem to love, and why not? We have four nights where we can go out to a plethora of awesome events and still have Monday to recover. From all the hype, Easter 2010 was sure to deliver!

You wouldn’t have known there was an event on down this shady little side street, in the “exotic” part of the city, except for the loud thump of a baseline being heard from nightclub Tatou. Clearly they have decided that people need to do more cardio exercise by adding about one hundred stairs at the entrance. The venue has had a revamp and is rumoured to be used by Future Entertainment on a regular basis.

The Main Room was massive. With podiums scattered everywhere it became a little difficult to maneuver – lucky for the side bleacher with those needing to rest their feet while still in the thick of it! First up was none other than local hero, Gavin Keitel. This guy knows how to get a crowd rolling, and it definitely would have taken a bit to get the punters that had showed up that night into the mood.

He threw out some massive bass lines and knew how to build it up which left me hanging. Then when he did drop it, he dropped it hard. Gavin surely knows how Melbourne likes it. He instantly brought out a hybrid and mish mash of tech house, minimal and some funky progressive tunes. His tech house set started out slowly (and perhaps repetitively), but it heated up with the crowd half way through, making Gavin’s one and a half hour set played out beautifully. Tracks came in smoothly and the beats just kept rolling. Gavin’s many years of experience translated into an almost flawless set, never skipping a beat and dropping them on target every time. He is truly a treasure of the Melbourne dance scene.

But tonight was just as much about Oliver Huntemann! The first time I heard him in my lounge room I remember literally feeling the rumble through my body – you know that feeling, we’ve all had it before. This was when I found love. As expected, Oliver Huntemann dropped some massive tunes including Dios . While the track selection was great, it seemed as though there were some technical issues with his sound not quite there. It could have been a little louder, with a deeper bass and perhaps more effective build ups as a result. It was a pretty good set though, and he did have me sporting my version of the Melbourne Shuffle.

A good night, as expected from Future and The Likes of You. I will say though that I felt the majority of the crowd wasn’t there for the music as it felt they were there as “the cool thing to do”. This seemed disappointing for the headliners. Happy Easter, Melbourne!
