I don’t think Canberra people received the memo that said TV Rock were coming to Academy on Friday to launch their international tour. For the people that were there – well, they can agree it was a night with a really great pair of DJs. Many of Canberra’s party crowd missed a great Australian duo. With TV Rock come Grant Smillie and Ivan Gough, and with successful names both as a duo and as solo artists, they really knew how to rock Canberra on this night.
While some think they may be ‘old school’ due to the lack of modern technological equipment such as a laptop (are we really this old now?) to help them mix songs, I thought this just showed how good these boys are – and they proved it. Mixing a few songs together all at once, they layered beats and vocals left right and centre. They played some dance floor fillers such as Heads Will Roll, the theme from Beverley Hills Cop, Calvin Harris’ I’m Not Alone and Yolanda Be Cool’s We Don’t Speak No Americano. Smillie and Gough would took turns mixing, standing alone at the desk while the other selected their next tune from a huge table of CD’s behind them.
Overall it was a really great night. It was just a real shame that there wasn’t a bigger crowd turnout. I think the message that came from this gig was that you can still have a great party on a Friday – for we certainly did!
