A new era in dance music kicked off on Saturday night where the foundations for a new city were laid. A city filled with colour, lasers, booming sound and an all-star cast of the best hard dance DJ’s Sydney and the world has to offer. This city is to be known as Magic City.

Thousands of party goers ventured through rain to the Sydney Olympic Sports Centre on Saturday night to witness history in the making. Opening the night with a back to back, trance filled set were two of Sydney’s most talented female DJ’s, Amber Savage and XDream. Despite deferring from their usual harder edged trance sound, their energetic b2b set was enough to get the small crowd onto to the dance floor.

In addition to the main area, Magic City truly catered for all by offering a number of smaller sub-genre arenas including Hardstyle, Hard trance, Anthems and Uplifiting trance. The Hard Trance room in particular went off, with a star line up of DJ’s playing back to back, mixing in track after track at 155bpm in quick succession – their cutting of tracks sensational to listen to.

Also worth a mentioned was the Anthems room which saw dance music icon and former Plastic resident John Ferris play an impressive hands-in-the-air-anthems set.

On venturing back into the Main Arena I was just in time to hear DJ’s Arbor and Cantosis drop Delirium’s Silence, a sure crowd pleaser which threw me onto the dance floor and got the crowd thirsting for more. Not only was the music an assault to the senses, so to were the visuals being projected onto giant screens surrounding the DJ booth.

With the arena now filling up, MC D was in fine form speed mc’ing and rocking the crowd with his introduction of the DJ’s. This signalled a changed in pace for the night, most noticeable when Dr Willis dropped Scott Project’s classic hard-trance anthem Overdrive.

The crazy UK tag team of Alex Kidd and Kid Kaos were next to team up, playing a banging set as both DJ’s jumped around the decks, pumped there fists in the air and bopped there heads to the heavy bassline. All while Alex Kidd ran around the stage like a madman provoking the crowd to cheer in appreciation. I don’t know how these guys do it, but their energy levels continued to rise after each track.

Toneshifterz, in full ‘Live’ form, pleased crowds with the Magic City theme song Unleash The Dragon which was teamed with a now full-blown laser show which saw lighting rigs being used in unison, creating a eclectic array of colours.

The Sports Centre was now starting to split at the seams as DJ Zany threw out an Italian hardstyle set with a selection of tunes from producers Tatanka and Technoboy, along with some of his own tracks.

As the night worn on, the Donkey Rollers vs Noisecontrollers set, kept the crowd rocking till dawn leaving me with nothing but gratitude to all the DJ’s for their efforts towards a fantastic start to a new era in dance music. See you all on the dance floor!
