Graeme Clark AKA ‘The Revenge’, has been releasing a number of exciting singles over the past couple of years. He’s also been making some amazing beats as one half of the 6th Borough Project. His many and varied productions have been a staple in my own collection over the past couple of years. Having said that, I had yet to hear him DJ. So it was with much anticipation that I headed on down to the opening of Revolver’s new Friday night, ‘WAX!’.

WAX! has much of the same crew who used to play Fridays @ Sorry Grandma. The very same night that hosted The Revenge when he played here in 09. Wax’s rotating list of DJs will include Otologic, Oohee, Lewie Day, Andras Fox, J’nett, El-Sea, Mr George, Roman Bruce, Aram Chapers, and Andee Frost.

I arrived to the sounds of Otologic, and whilst the crowd was still building, they were starting to get down to their funky blend of disco and straight-up old school house. Whilst waiting at the front room bar I heard them drop ‘For the People’ by Ron Basejam. With its positive, soulful vibe, and gospel chants – it was just the track to get me in the mood for what was about to come.

The Revenge finally came on at 2am, and dropped I:Cube’s ‘Falling’, which happens to be one of my favourite deep house tracks of recent times (do yourself a favour!). Sent an instant wash of euphoria over the crowd, and kind of won me over instantly, really.

Graeme’s mixing was very smooth, as one would expect. He maintained a nice, even vibe throughout his set. The highlight for me (and for much of the crowd it seemed) was when he played his own killer remix of Ilja Rudman’s ‘Night People’. Recently released on Graeme’s ‘Instruments of Rapture’ label.

We certainly got our value out of the evening, with Graeme playing about 30 mins over his expected 2 hour set. By the time The Revenge finished playing at 4:30 I was almost done for the evening. So it was with some regret when Andee Frost came to the decks to spin his own brand of jacked-up soulful house, I was thinking of home time. Shame really, as the night was just in full swing…

The night had a relaxed, and friendly vibe to it. Great way to kick off the weekend, and on a whole, a success for the WAX! Crew.
