Saturday night was one of those nights best spent at home under a blanket – certainly well away from a dance party cruise on Sydney Harbour. The young and carefree attendees were oblivious to the change in season and wearing shorter than short dresses, leaving bare legs exposed ready to catch their death. The event was moving freely with attendees navigating between both floors. It was amazing to see how people huddled at the beginning of the night then by mid set, didn’t have a care in the world. I wish that I stayed on the dance floor instead of exploring the harbour from above. The frosty bite and motioning of the boat did little to stave off the pending seasickness.
But DJ Matt otherwise known as DJ Lights Out got the night going mixing house and disco tracks. Don’t You Want Somebody To Love mix and TJ Dean’s Put It In, Put It Out was a great icebreaker and before too long the dance floor and upper level were abuzz with movement. DJ/producer duo Vengeance is doing very well on the local front. Clearly well known, the pair were given a warm reception and their tenacity for mixing well known hits such as Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy and Blur’s Song 2, added some class and familiarity to the set. Perhaps in ode to their upcoming tour, Bon Jovi’s Living On A Prayer made an appearance and all was good in the world as the old timers became hip again.
Headliner DJ Tom Piper threw caution to the wind as he threw out some lovely mixes, including Dirtee Cash and Hearts of Stone. The effortless zeal for mixing tracks and great arrangement was noted with a Ministry of Sound effervescence flowing. Come 11pm and the night had come to a head. Long legs made all the longer with mammoth heels had come off and shirts unbuttoned exposed a tirade of sweat. The young blood of Sydney know a thing or two about warming up on a cold June night.
