A chilly night greeted the 7th installment of promoter Boomtick’s yearly winter club festival Major Break. This year it was back at Villa having sold out the day before with a stack of internationals primed to tear the place apart with their brand of beats and breaks.

Veterans Fdel, Philly, & Micah took an hour each for the warm-up as the venue filled to capacity in anticipation for the overseas visitors to grace the decks. Up at midnight was Peo de Pitte, opening with his storming remix of Drumattic Twins Crazy Love. The Swedish producer was clearly into it, body moving, arms flailing, as he laid out his brand of music to the receptive crowd. His profile has risen sharply over the last 12 months with a plethora of remixes and original tracks to showcase his futuristic production style. Straddling breaks and electro house, full of staccato vocal samples with an energetic aural FX, the tunes were ready-made for a dance floor like this. His big remix of the much maligned Sidney Samson Riverside did the business as well as a de-dubstepped version of a Rusko tune.

Tomek from scene superstars NAPT was next (his offsider home in London with a baby due). He immediately hit the booth with the confidence one would expect from a highly rated globetrotting DJ. With some massive tunes in the NAPT back catalogue to cover, he did not disappoint. New single Fuck Critics, last year’s smash Make My Day, and the huge remix of Slyde’s Frequency were very well received. Touching on some breaks classics in the mix, samples of Plump DJs Shifting Gears, and Stanton Warriors Still Here, drifted in and out. Genre straddlers, like Noisia’s dirty Alpha Centauri and the Sub Focus anthem Could This Be Real were also big tunes in a big set. The energy levels were kept high until a late dubstep meandering, before topping off with a drum ‘n’ bass rinse out to close off a great headlining set.

Kieron from the Black Noise crew (previously know as Aquasky), had the chance to continue the tunes booming out the Villa soundsystem. The new name for the group reflects a change in sound and this was clearly evident with the 4/4 beats a sharp contrast to the syncopation that preceded. Using a laptopand midi controller, the bass heavy thump ripped through the room as many punters lapped up the change in style. Many more punters were slightly disillusioned in the music choice, and the sameness of the beats contributed to a decent sized exodus from the venue. That said, the Black Noise crew are prolific producers, and many of their original tracks and remixes were dropped throughout. Late-set specialist BobNoceros took the chance to bring back the breaks with a sweaty mix of heavy beats to satisfy the remaining punters. A highlight, coincidentally, was Aquasky’s remix of the Baitercell & Schumacher track Lock and Load. Major Break 7 was a massive night from Boomtick, and confirms the event as a must-see highlight of Perth’s winter club calendar.
