You would have to have been sleeping under a rock with an industrial sized set of headphones on to have not heard the impact that Yolanda Be Cool and DCUP making around the world thanks to their infectious hit We Speak No Americano . The track has now hit number 1 on the charts in 13 different countries as well as numerous top 5s to go with it as the most played club tune on the planet. Couple that with last year’s Afro Nuts and the stream of remixes DCUP has been pumping out, and there are a lot of people in Perth dying for the guys to head West and put on a show. Thankfully, the guys at Boomtick answered, bringing the We Speak No Americano Tour to Ambar for one night only.
It was clear from the line bending around the corner at 11:30 that it was going to be a big night at Ambar, with plenty of punters eager to get in the door and get their groove on. Apres-Ski got the crowd nice and warm early on, and while his track selection was good and he filled his supporting role well, the mixing left a bit to be desired on a few occasions, with a couple of awful mixes. Without being overly critical, he did recover well and finish off his set with some decent tracks, leading way for DCUP to hit the stage for his set.
Starting with No Jazz and Toms Diner , DCUP (real name Duncan MacLennan) got the dancefloor swelling with his remixes that have both him and his co-headliners on the map in the last 6 months. With a very 80s and disco feel to his set, it was clear he had come to party, as had the crowd, showing enthusiam at every familiar song he dropped. As the energy of the set climbed, so did the crowd’s anticipation, knowing that at any moment the dancefloor could erupt with that song…
Unfortunately, the end of DCUPs set came too quickly, as he really did play an amazing set. However all was not lost, because with that Sylvester Martinez and Johnson Peterson, AKA Yolanda Be Cool hit the stage. Playing a very similar flavour of tunes to their friend DCUP, they continued right where he left off, continuing to whip the crowd into a frenzy. Their self-described brand of Party Tech is both catchy and original and definately gets a dancefloor moving. Then, after what seemed like no time at all, the crowd erupted as the first few bars of We Speak No Americano was dropped. What followed was 4 minutes of chaos. The dancefloor swelled to massive proportions and it dawned on me how amazing it was that these guys had the ability to draw such a large crowd based on the fact that most people in the room would only know them by this one song! Following that track, the thunderous congas and laser-synths kept the tunes pumping, with the guys dropping Afro Nuts as well as a few tunes off their upcoming album, which I, for one, can not wait for.
Sadly, the night was drawing to a close, and Yolanda Be Cool handed the decks over to our local legends Oli and Micah. Yolanda Be Cool and DCUP have definitely found a formula for success, and we will no doubt hear plenty of their catchy tunes taking over our airwaves and dance floors in the not too distant future!
