Not quite a year after they first started, I visited something a little bit different on a Friday night at Room 680. Freefall hosted a bit of a party to celebrate the return of their first headliner, Scotsman Mark Sherry on his latest visit to Australia. Jumping on the 3D bandwagon, goggles were required to get the full effect of the visuals on the main screens. The outside area was decked with a giant birdcage. I love that every time I go to Room it’s a slightly different set-up. Good decor, good atmosphere and a good crowd makes all the difference and all of the crowd were there for a rocking time.

In his first main room set at the venue, Jed opened with the aid of a couple of inflatable booth babes, no goggles required. Some mega funky prog happening, I felt that he was wasted on an opening set. There were blow up dolls behind the decks, behind the bar and even up on the lounges. Not long before the end of the set, we got to relive old club favourite, Robert MilesChildren. What a throwback.

Mister Aaron Camz turned it on with chunky bass and steady beats leading the way to killers mash-ups. Camz definitely got the floor moving as the space filled up. As we got closer to the headline act, the tunes started to get a little heavier. He’s one to look out for and should get some support in the Top 50.
The front room was still in its oriental lounge phase and perfect for chilling out and listening to a few lower key tunes and slightly faster bar service. There were still plenty of bodies of the non-inflatable kind, balancing the main room nicely while still keeping the pace.

Whilst listening to some absolutely banging tunes from Dr Willis and watching the room start to warm up, Sherry & closing act Scott Alert could be found hanging at the bar. You’ve got to love it when DJs hang out with the crowd and get a couple of drinks in rather than playing too cool for school. When the shots come out, you know we’re all up for a big night.

They didn’t have to wait long, as the dance floor was quite full just before 1am and everyone was ready to party on. In the mix, I heard Stereosonic visitor Wippenberg’s Pong and plenty of other killer tracks. Freefall was definitely harder than your average dance music night but everyone was there to have a good time and just loved it. I had a fantastic night and would love to do it all again! Sophie Sugar certainly proved herself worthy of a place in the top Trance DJ list, with a fantastic driving and uplifting set. Her production is great and I had a massive smile on my face for most of her set.

The one thing I’m not going to forget for a while is that after starting with God is a DJ, Mark Sherry climbed up on the booth to rock out to Missing and immediately scored a full floor full of hands in the air. People have been waiting expectantly for Sherry to come to Melbourne and I can bet they weren’t disappointed. His tech trance is a massive party kicker and really made for an epic night, which some off the beaten track tunes for good mix.

If you’re still smiling after waking up with sore feet and a sore head, you know you had a good time. Thanks Freefall: that is what a party is supposed to be.
