For the last of the Melbourne ITM50 tour parties, Room’s regular Saturday night, Majik played host to the local trance set, as the biggest weekly trance night in Melbourne. Majik regulars have proven a late crowd, venues often not filling until after 1am. They’re also younger – the difference in demographic to a regular weekly night versus an event night is very clear. The front room, playing more techno, house and electro style, was definitely mellower than the main room with its big room or arena-style familiar trance tracks.

To warm up the room, Steve Strangis got into it with some great tracks from the last couple of months. Knowing the crowd is one of the reasons Strangis has done so well in the last few years. I felt the sound quality was a bit muted towards the high end and it was a bit hard too early but otherwise, the crowd loved it. I have come to expect plenty of banging tracks and no messing around from Steve Strangis, and on this night, I wasn’t disappointed.

Old favourite Charlie Zee played an interesting set, mixing uplifting classics and harder trance tracks. Even with mixes more tuned to that style, I thought it was sometimes a bit up and down; but he cranked out some big classic favourites. Charlie Zee has to be one of the guys that looks like he enjoys playing the most.

There was minimal decor compared to other nights at the same venue and the previous week’s ITM50 party. However, as a regular club night, it probably didn’t need it, as the people and the atmosphere more than made up for it. It has been great to see the ITM50 tour and getting behind the locals nights to showcase the talent that we’ve got in Melbourne. The top notch line up of residents included legend Papa Smurf, DJ Kat and Jewelz, who never disappoint the punters. The front room guys all did a great job with a blend to balance the main space, which dominated with a full room full of party people and plenty of happy faces.
