Flicking through old interviews and reviews of disco hero Todd Terje, it’s clear the man is a certified go to for music that ignites a smile and puts fire into your dance moves. He remixes tunes you know into something even more fun and playful. It is a true talent and there cannot be a single soul in the world who wouldn’t absolutely love being on a dance floor with Terje in command.
One common vein of happiness between the public and dance is song recognition though it requires two other vital ingredients to really work: a sound system that shifts your insides and a musical whiz kid on the decks who understands and can master the beauty of a well put together tune. Regardless of where you catch him, you will be subjected to a DJ who encompasses all of this magic to make a crowd glow.
Promoted by Future Classic, Adult Disco at the Civic Underground was a fitting stage for this disco maestro. Red balloons, shiny disco ball and the pit below the stage full of a Saturday night crowd shakin’ booty. Admittedly, there was a certain level of fear in me as we walked through the shrieks and white skirts a Saturday night in the CBD attracts, but the Future Classic boys aim to show you a consistently good time week in week out.
Gems like Stealers Wheel Stuck in the Middle with You, AAC’s Here Comes That Sound Again and a Bollywood infused Billie Jean went off to great success, plus a banging version of Diskokaines Rock-a-Boogie remixed to pricked ears. Despite the use of many an ol’ classic, Terje adamantly never plays it safe, having the courage to throw something down that could scare even the most die hard of fans. But unfortunately Todd, you just won’t get rid of us that easily. Nothing too dark and weird here, but there were chunks of the unknown in there to ensure this was no cheese spread juke box.
There are not many regular nights in this town where the lower door charge is not met with lowered expectations, and the crowd fully appreciated Future Classic’s stellar effort by dancing from warm up to near sunrise. Next week’s bank holiday will see Holy Ghost from the DFA stable, a hot favourite of Terje’s who will be sure to carry on the good times flame.
