Back in the early ‘90s, a certain man named Martin Reeves stepped into a world of music that would have him being called one of the best DJs of our time. Krafty Kuts was born. Voted one of the best breakbeat DJs three years running, it wasn’t hard to see why his show at Villa Nightclub was completely sold out.

Arriving early I was treated to the sounds of locals Philly Blunt and Micah – aka Black and Blunt – both known for smashing out great sets of their own. The crowd was not disappointed. The combination of house and breakbeat filled the room giving every punter an introduction to what was to be a truly epic experience.

As the clock hit half past midnight, the man himself emerged to a round of applause to delighted fans. As the first bassline dropped, a shower of confetti rained down on the masses, just to let any stragglers know the party had begun.

Known for his exquisite mixing ability, the entire arsenal was on display as he dropped in Jack Beats’ take on Shutterbug by Big Boi crossed with the DJ Ark edit of Deadmau5/Wolfgang Gartner collaboration Animal Rights. The tracklisting was almost all completely breakbeat, with the house tracks given a special ‘re-rub’ by the man himself. Not only did the subtle changes work wonders for the set, they give the entire experience a more personalised feel.

One of the times Krafty did stray from his specialised genre, he did it with such a kick it just blew the roof off the venue. Jumping into the Drum and Bass genre, Perth local Shockone got some love with his track Polygon being dropped into the fray. Even the overplayed Duck Sauce got a fresh sound, with Sigma’s Barbra Streisand remix bringing a new dimension to the track.

Overall the vibe was greatly positive for the three hour set, with the various punters (aged 18-40) rocking up to appreciate one of the finer DJs of our era. With all honesty it was one of the best sets I’ve seen this year…if not more. Legendary.
