T’was the end of an era as the Substance crew hosted their very last rooftop party at the Terminus Hotel. What better way to see it off than a Christmas party, complete with DJ Santa hitting the decks at 6pm?

Arriving at the Terminus Hotel, we pondered the grey clouds which loomed above us, and looked at each other with slightly worried expressions on our faces. We need not have worried, as when we entered the rooftop there was ample cover for everyone. DJ Simon Murphy’s progressive beats were emanating from the sound system, very clear and punchy.

Heading to the bar to grab a drink, a familiar face was distracting me at the corner of my eye. That could not be – no – IT IS – Justin Bieber – what the? Oh, it’s just a cardboard cut out of him. Good. I don’t think I could remain at any party where Juzzy B had been invited. Having said that, it did not stop my friend and I taking multiple photos of us with the J-man in various ironic, white-boy gangster poses.

At 5pm, Rich Ok hit the decks, subtly bringing the music towards more intense, driving progressive and electro. At this time the crowd really started to fill the dancefloor, and they were right up for it. Stompin their feet, and pumping fists in the air. Things were perhaps getting a tad intense for us at this point, so we headed on down to the beer garden. The great thing was that the rooftop overlooked the beer garden, so even though we were chilling out, the music above was clear as a bell.

Then it was DJ Santa’s turn. Obviously the punters had all been very good girls and boys, because they seemed to get exactly what they wanted. Here’s me thinking he was into the more traditional carols, but alas, Santa is a right prog-house fiend! Taran M continued on where Santa left off, with a suspiciously similar style…

At 8pm DJ J-Slyde kicked off with local M.C. Ru C.L. complimenting his phat, bass-heavy breaks on the mic. They made a great combo. In an unfortunate twist of irony half way through his set, it was announced that the show had been cut early, due to noise restrictions. This is the very reason it was the last party at The Terminus rooftop, due to building development in the area. Ahhh, local government – the scourge of any underground dance party crew. All in all, though, the Substance crew managed to see out their final rooftop party in style.
