There is a certain camaraderie built between punters at a music festival that has threatening weather conditions. You have an innate bond, an understanding of the commitment you have made to rock up to this particular event, despite the fact that Melbourne’s insanely unpredictable forecasts mean that you are most certainly going to get drenched.
In fact, we go in spite of the rain. Laughing in the face of dark clouds; ignoring the flocks of birds flying in the opposite direction from you; and giving the finger to the flags whipping wildly in the wind. We’re going to party no matter what – this is meant to be summer, dammit! And no, we don’t need an umbrella.
And with that, the faithful and true came to get their revelry on at the SLAM St. Kilda Foreshore Beach Party. Not that everyone dressed appropriately or wore sensible shoes (seriously, what IS the fascination with wearing wedges at events? You’re walking on grass and sand. Is your look meant to scream ‘gravity defying chic’?!), yet we obviously had summer in our hearts, so the short shorts were going to make an appearance regardless of the drizzle!`
In lieu of the initial sunshine component needed for a beach party, the other elements of the day were aligning themselves nicely. Being a boutique summer festival party, it meant that numbers in attendance were kept quite low (most probably also due to the schizophrenic weather). There were bouncy balls with smiley faces (that may or may not have been brought in by some very excitable friends of mine), no long queues for the bar or bathroom, and an insanely fun Channel V tent with a silent disco.
The tunes were being pumped out by some of Australia’s premier dance acts and DJ’s. They included the duo of Nick Young & Aaron Trotman (AKA Diablo Martini) warring it out on the decks; Chardy gearing up the crowd as always; Black Dogs showing their prowess and Seany B belting out the vocal melodies in the lead up to Miss Zoe Badwi. She dropped crowd favourite tracks including Kelly Rowland’s, When Love Takes Over and of course her own chart topping single Freefallin’. The petite singer gave a superb performance with an energy that was palpable and rocketed throughout the crowd.
The Stafford Brothers and Sam La More were also keeping the crowd super happy as Kaz James rounded out an awesome afternoon of stellar tunes at this great little summer festival opener. It was well organised and a thoroughly enjoyable day that couldn’t be dampened by any weather condition. High fives all round to those who endured and rocked out to some superlative local talent.
