Villa nightclub was absolutely heaving Australia Day Eve to the sounds of the mighty Stanton Warriors. The UK outfit hadn’t been to Perth for over a year, so the punters were ripe to hear what the boys had in store.

As I walked in I made my way to the upper deck to check out Micah spinning some funky breaks, getting the energy in the room high with a mix of new and old-school breakbeat. I’ve never had a chance to write about Micah in any of my reviews before, but I must say this: he is a true talent in the Perth scene who never ever fails to deliver. Much respect.

Villa itself is a magic venue for big DJ events; especially when it’s packed and heaving. From the top balcony you could just see an ocean of people seemingly on every surface of the room waving their hands around madly. At that was before Stanton took to the decks…

Once one-am struck, the Warriors stepped up and proceeded to absolutely blow the roof off of Villa for two hours straight. The way the boys play is amazing, with perfect synchronisation between the DJ and the live sample triggering. The set never dips in energy and amazingly the boys don’t even so much as need to nod at each other. It’s just years of playing together that they know where the other one is and what is coming next. It’s truly amazing to see when a pair perform electronic music in perfect synchronicity.

The boys remixed and mashed up anthems like Handz Up and Shake It Up on the fly, getting a real response from the crowd. They even chucked in some heavy dubstep throughout the set, and finished with a massive remix of _Dead Prez’s Hip Hop.

Stanton Warriors were a welcome return to Perth with their unique style and high-energy set. I vote we get them here more often to shake up dancefloors to packed-out crowds over and over again.
