I was a Wobble virgin until last Saturday night. Burst the cherry in a mighty big dirty d’n’b way.

My introduction into Melbourne’s vibrant and underground drum’n’bass scene was memorable … and for all the right reasons …

And to venture into the belly of The Night Owl for the very special celebration of Melbourne’s local d’n’b hero, Cubist, ten years, made this one awesome night.

“DJ Cubist, aka Eden Krummins, is one of Melbourne’s most influential tastemakers. As promoter of Wobble, he’s nurtured, and even reinvigorated, the city’s drum’n’bass scene, while ushering in dubstep.” 3DWorld, 18 May 2011

A background in the man himself provides an true understanding to just how much Cubist has devoted his life to his beloved d’n’b scene. In the past ten years, Cubist has been actively involved in creating, developing and nurturing Melbourne’s drum’n’bass scene. Since he first started his monthly Drum ‘n’ Bass Sessions ‘Audible Level’ at the Carron in North Melbourne back in 2001, to his presenting of ‘Cubical Views’ on 3CR and later 3RRR in 2002, and his ‘Local Lineup’ party at Bunker Lounge in 2005, he’s always been focused on bringing fresh attention to Melbs’ underground beat scene. Notably, in 2007 he was selected to be part of Red Bull Music Academy, Canada, spending time developing his sound through learnings from names such as Carl Craig, Theo Parrish, Waajeed plus more – Cubist was surely on his way. Over the years Cubist has released tunes on Generation Dub’s Blueprint. Twisted Individuals Zombie, DJ Sappo’s Advisory and Allsorts. His music is supported by Grooverider, DJ Hype, DJ Die, DJ Brockie, Nicky Blackmarket, Doc Scott, Fabio plus many more. He truly is Melbourne’s, and even you could say Australia’s, best d’n’b DJ and producer.

In 2009 he toured the UK playing alongside idols MC Fearless, MC Foxy, Heist, Serum plus more and in 2009 began presenting ‘The Drum ‘n’ Bass Sessions’ on Kiss FM. In the last few years, he was even nominated for best newcomer in the Official Drum and Bass Awards in the UK , which is a testimony to his dedication and devotion to his craft. But 2007 was the year that Wobble began, this monthly event that has built a loyal and dedicated following for all things grimy.

Last Saturday night was the perfect opportunity to see Cubist at his best, playing a three hour set of his old favourites from the past 15 years plus new music and upcoming releases. Admittedly due to my lack of knowledge of track names in this genre, besides a handful of stuff from London Elektricity and High Contrast, I won’t pretend that I can list off all the tracks I heard … but I will tell you this – the night was one massive journey through d’n’b past and present, with a tasty selection of dubstep and a splash of jungle, with some mighty strong MC’ing action on top.

Upon arrival, the venue already had a small gathering of people at 10.30pm, enjoying the drink specials on pints and bopping along to the cool dubstep and melodic d’n’b bursting from the speakers. Suitably impressed immediately with the layout of the Night Owl, we grabbed ourselves a pint and a couch in the corner, to take in the arriving punters and soak up the beats. As the night progressed, the venue slowly filled with d’n’b boys and girls, drink in hand, progressively getting more and more into the grimy, dirty d’n’b beats being dished out by the Wobble DJs including AC23, Spinfx, Woz, and more. Admittedly the crowd was a bit male dominated and had its expected suburban guys, but in contrast there were many other diverse punters just out for a fun night. The music progressed just nicely, and at a pleasant pace even for a newbie like me, giving me a chance to adapt to each level of heaviness and dirtiness. Despite a few sound issues here and there, the night seemed to run like clockwork, an obvious sign of a party that’s been run well for a long time. And with Cubist at the helm, it’s no surprises to see why.

This night couldn’t have been more in contrast to what I had been to the night before (Protoculture @ RMH), and yet had several similarities – Consideration for the punter, friendly laid back crowd, an underground feel and attitude, and a feeling of being able to let go and be who you are. Both nights reminded me just how important these factors are in having a great night out – and I loved being able to feel like that again.

May I also extend a huge thank you to Cubist and the staff, everyone was so welcoming, making Wobble one of the friendliest nights I’ve been to in a while.

If you haven’t yet burst your Wobble cherry yet … I highly recommend it.

As the crew says … Wobble Out. Wobble out indeed.
