There’s no doubt about it – Melbourne loves Carl Cox. And just quietly, I have a sneaking suspicion that Carl loves Melbourne too. Since the DJ/producer/label owner graced our shores with his semi-permanent presence for three months of the year, the relationship between one of the world’s most well-loved stalwarts of the scene and ye olde Melbourne town has grown deeper and deeper over the years. Each time Carl plays here, we fall in love with him even more…and he also with us.

So when the chance to see Carl Cox in wintry June, rather than in his usual summer months stints, there was a “hells yes!” shouted not only from me, but from many fans across the city. Eric Powell and Carl Cox were teaming up again, this time for a winter edition of their notorious Mobile Disco parties, squeezing it in before Carl heads back for his infamous Space Ibiza residency, this year celebrating 10 years at the hedonistic island club.

Sneaking into a venue isn’t something I think Carl could easily do but he managed to make a special guest appearance at the old skool & classics gig at Belfast the Friday before, shocking and surprising the Prince of Wales attendees when he hopped onto the decks. Riding off this high, Carl headed to the waterfront and luxurious club, Alumbra, two days later for an afternoon of classic tunes and cocktails in the sun. And that’s exactly what went down.

The Mobile Disco concept is one to marvel at and truly appreciate. It gets back to the roots of dance parties, creating a relaxed vibe and cool atmosphere, where being yourself and unwinding with friends is mandatory. If you’ve ever been lucky enough to venture to one of the infamous Mobile Discos in a winery on the outskirts of Melbourne in the past years, you are sure to agree that you were given a real treat.

More recently in February, in addition to the fantastic vibe, ambience, great wine and setting, and musical talent of Carl Cox and Eric Powell, De La Soul also made a guest appearance. Damn that was a great event! If you haven’t had this pleasure, then here’s a little insight into what in that past summer ‘Mobile Disco’ entailed:

Classic ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s funk, soul, acid house, techno, house, all from the personal collections of the big man himself, with Eric Powell providing solid and quality support. Flaunting a Hawaiian t-shirt, Carl looked right at home (literally), playing his records, rockin’ out, singing along and simply having a ball. Of course, we all had a ball in return. Place this at a spectacular setting with a gourmet BBQ, great local wine and bubbles available, picnic rugs advised, and a laidback, no bullshit policy. Without a doubt, this equals one special and memorable day.

So how did the winter version of this event fare? Did it live up to expectations?

To be fair, the situation was on a different scale to the summer edition of Mobile Disco. Alumbra, with its spectacular city views, outdoor BBQ and a cocktail list the size of your arm was an idyllic choice for this event. As the sunset – and Carl – started to ramp it up, there was an strong energy in the air, and it seemed no one cared or worried about work tomorrow.

Alumbra’s loyal following were out in force this night, slowly easing into the event, while from 6pm onwards the place really pumping. No laid-back affair here, the style was Sunday style dressed up, typical Alumbra attire; a notable move away of the relaxed chilled out vibe of previous Mobile Discos. The music was yet again solid classic dance, exactly what was expected if you’d been to the February event. One track that sticks like glue in my mind of this day is Where Love Lives by Alison Limerick. Seeing Carl drop this with such joy, it always lives on in my mind long after the event has ended.

All in all, the event was a success. Despite freezing weather and wild winds developing as the evening progressed, inside you were none the wiser and a quality event was definitely put on. Everybody Loves the Sunshine may be true but regardless of much sunshine, Carl Cox and Eric Powell were both able to do what they do best – rock a great party!

Take me to the Promised Land Carl Cox, one where all parties can be as fun as the Mobile Disco parties are – but maybe next time, let’s stick to the summery weather and the great outdoors. Nothing seems to beat that.
