The French invaded Melbourne’s Roxanne Parlour on Friday 5 August as electro pop trio Yelle took to the stage just after midnight. Fresh off their US tour with Katy Perry and incredible performance at this year’s Coachella music festival, Yelle performed at Splendour In The Grass and found time for some sideshows on their short tour down under.
Decked out in their ‘Safari Disco Club’ gear, lead singer pocket-rocket Julie Budet emerged from the dark in an intriguing Ghillie suit. They began with track S’eteint Le Soleil, engaging the audience with an instrumental of drumming followed by synth-pop and emotive foreign lyrics. Roxanne Parlour filled to the brim as fans pushed their way to the front of the stage to catch a glimpse of the petite pop powerhouse.
Julie revealed herself from underneath the green camouflage net-like costume, sporting a leopard print jumpsuit, as the next song Qui Est Cette Fille kicked in, “Je m’appelle Yelle; elle s’appelle Robyn…” which many Robyn fans would recognize as a French cover of Who’s That Girl? which was previously recorded for an indie/electro Kitsuné compilation.
Yelle continued to deliver high energy, catchy electro pop tunes from their albums Pop Up and recently released Safari Disco Club including Unillusion, Jai Bu, La Musique and Ce Jeu, with the crowd joining in on the infectious whistle. Come En Fant really got the party started as the crowds danced along as per Julie’s requests for everyone to “shake their booty booty”.
Je Veux Te Voir was the standout moment of the night, sending the crowd into an absolute frenzy, dancing around to this fast-paced club track so much so that the dance floor felt like it was about to collapse in from all the jumping and vibration. Julie, so impressed by Melbourne’s reception of Yelle’s music, yelled out “OH BONJOUR!” in her lovely French accent.
Taking things down for a bit of a twist, crowds held up their hands high above their heads in the shape of a heart confessing their love for Yelle as they played Que Veux-Tu and C’est Pas Une Vie. Lead single Safari Disco Club was an absolute smasher of an anthem for the night. The lyrics advise the party animals to dance in the club and get crazy, which is exactly what they did.
After leaving the stage for a moment and making the crowds scream for an encore they sung the Crookers-produced track Cooler Couleur and the explosive A Cause Des Garçons, pushing the dancefloor to us every bit of energy they had left to get jumping and dancing for one last time.
