When it comes to the word ‘glitch-step’, head scratching may occur in the majority of the population. However Friday night at Shape provided just that, with Melbourne native Opiou coming to town to bring his signature sound to the fans in attendance. Shape nightclub hosted the event, and what a venue it was to bring the masses to the wobbly funk.

Arriving around midnight, I was treated to the sounds of local artist Rregular. The night took shape to a lively, drumstep/glitch infused set that had the punters moving along to every wobble. One observation was that this music was the strangest thing to dance to, with the BPMs significantly slower than that of a drum & bass set and higher than a dubstep set. This provided for some hilariously awkward looking dance moves along with the filthy beats.

As Opiou took the stage the now packed-out Shape began to shuffle for position to see the up and coming artist, anticipation turned to awe as the first bassline was dropped. Trademark track Robo Booty made an early appearance, with the artist adding a personal touch by drumming along on his electronic drums to the beat, creating something more of a live performance.

This was a great addition to the set, as it showed that as well as being skilled mixing behind the decks, he could back up his studio sounds on the live stage. As the set progressed, the bum shaking beats continued, with tracks off his newest EP Squiggle dropped into the fray. Opiuo finished his set with one of my personal favourites Creamy Taco, a track that left the crowd feeling (at least looking) impressed overall.

In the end the night was a huge success for everyone involved. The man delivered his relatively new genre to the people well, and the people danced their ass off. Many thanks to Knowledge Music and Shape for making the event happen. This one won’t be forgotten soon.
