Drugs, video games and overweight police. All facets of iconic Aussie band Regurgitator’s back catalogue that spans over fifteen years, culminating with their new album SuperHappyFunTimesFriends. On a cold Adelaide Thursday night, the crowd turned out to see one of Australia’s much loved bands. Supported by Adelaide’s own The Bottlerockets, WA’s Boys Boys Boys! And New Zealand’s electro man Disasteradio (aka Luke Powell), we were in for a mid-week treat.

First up and playing to an empty d-floor was local outfit The Bottlerockets, their erratic, cool and stylish mix ups went down smooth. The lack of interest didn’t seem to bother them too much, at one stage jumping on an amp stack in an attempt to leave an impression. A tight set to a still-gathering crowd.

Boys Boys Boys! are a six-piece Perth outfit that have a style somewhere between CSS, B52s and teenage pop that is catchy as all hell. The sexually-charged __ Ticky-Ticky Boom had an innocent teenage vibe that was awesome. __ Casio Joy had some deep synth lines that complimented three female members’ harmonies. This unsigned band made a mark on the crowd and will do so into the future.

Next up was New Zealand’s very own electro prince, Disasteradio (aka Luke Powell), who could’ve been mistaken for part of the road-crew. Surrounded by keys and effects-boards, he threw everything at the building crowd. Constantly switching from vocoder to synth and sweating profusely, his obscure dance-moves surprised the crowd as much as his boogie-inducing bangers did. Awesome Feelings and Gravy Rainbow were epic but the robot-voiced Charisma was the highlight, and if you close your eyes, he could be mistaken for Daft Punk. Cool set.

After having to stand through five or six ‘80s love songs, the crowd was getting restless while waiting for ‘The Gurge’ to appear. It was well worth the wait. The band exploded onto stage in skeleton costumes that later were ripped off due to the rising heat under the lights. Opening with _I Sucked A Lot Of Cock To Get Where I Am, the crowd were instantly under the spell of Regurgitator’s original style of nerdy-alt pop. Classic tracks Black Bugs, Polyester Girl and Fat Cop brought me back to my high school days while they mixed it up with One Day from their eighth record SuperHappyFunTimesFriends.

The mosh was in full swing, and one lucky punter was brought up on stage to sing old school track Blubber Boy, and to his credit got through it pretty well despite looking hugely uncomfortable. Regurgitator has a lot of love for their fans, and to see their chemistry with each other on stage and smiles on their faces was awesome. The boys closed with the ‘90s anthem The Song Formerly Known As, which had the crowd in coordinated vertical jumps. An amazing set from a band that is well loved and respected.
