Rain, hail or shine, it was all promised to happen at Ivy this October long weekend. We all know that this once iconic and celebrated venue has had its fair share of bad press lately – but much to my surprise, the turn out was considerable, even despite the bad weather. Must it rain October long weekend every year…really?
The night opened up with a stellar line-up of locals including Minx, Cadell and Ben Morris who were in no mood to simply contain the crowd, despite the scattered showers throughout the night. They definitely helped prep up everyone with the launch of David Guetta’s official Nothing But The Beat album launch party, playing the familiar collaboration tracks we’ve all grown to love or hate.
Hot on their heels were the newly-crowned Australia’s Number 1 DJ Stafford Brothers, who came down for the occasion to headline Ivy for the first time. I have to say, the pair put in the work to keep the audience hyped from start to finish, despite a very obvious technical error during the changing of a track which was clearly a little awkward for the boys. But they made up for that small blunder by pumping out a string of killer tracks: Wasted, Zoro, Speakers Freakers and Open Up Your Arms – obviously, they were gunning for the crowd pleasers.
But the crowds reaction to Grant Smillie and Ivan Gough, a.k.a. TV ROCK hitting the stage confirmed that everyone were more than ready for the duo’s set. Wasting no time ramping into a killer house set with a blazing “TV ROCK” screen behind them, highlights included favourites such as Diamonds In The Sky, Elevated and Love On My Mind which had the crowd bopping around with their drinks in hand.
However, the biggest highlight of the night came when Rudy came onstage. Staying classy with his white tee and bow tie, flannelette blazer and killer black shades, he mesmerized the beautiful crowd all over the venue with his voice and charisma. Rudy belted out the tracks he’s famed for: Dirty South’s Phazing and Axwell’s remix of TV Rock’s In The Air, which received an absolutely raucous reception.
Other well known tracks like Release Me, Skitzo Dancer and of course, their cheesy ARIA winning single Flaunt It were dropped to similar crowd response. The act continued to keep everyone on the dance floor with their remixes of tracks by Groove Armada, Armand Van Helden, Dirty South, Calvin Harris, and Paul Van Dyk until the early hours of the morning. However, by the end of their set it was evident that the majority of people had scattered. Perhaps the event organizers should consider changing the event’s starting time, as the majority at of attendees tend to get too tired/wasted to stay long enough to watch the end of the main act.
In short, the night saw a damn good set from the Melbourne duo with a great hands-in-the-air vibe – always a sign of success with club sets. With this performance, I guess you could say there are even fewer boxes left for TV Rock to tick.
