No one can keep a secret. Whether it be leaking supposed Big Day Out starters or headliners for Stereosonic, the ancient and controversial art of secrecy is a dying concept. With rumour starters Big Day Out Spy, Nui Te Koha and Miss Info all attracting international attention, how does a ‘secret show’ work anymore?

When Gold Coast’s unique hotspot Elsewhere announced their ‘Secret Show’ the previous week, locals were thrown into disarray and forced to guess who this elusive surprise act might be.

Like Chinese whispers, the queue outside Elsewhere was riddled with questionable guesses and outlandish assumptions. I even heard one wild turkey take a stab at a one-off Daft Punk club show. However, having let slip on their Facebook a day prior, anticipation of Australia’s finest dance duo wafted through the club once inside. The sweet aroma and warm glow that defines multi-Aria award winners Sneaky Sound System pumped out like a smoke machine.

Reaching capacity just after 1am, the sardine-tin caught fire once duo Black Angus and Connie Mitchell casually strolled onto the dance floor. With a case full of discs, and a microphone in hand, the pair welcomed their patient fans with smiles. Blistering through commercial successes 2 and their self titled first album, tonight’s performance saw recent release From Here to Anywhere achieve the applause it greatly deserves. Standout tracks 1984, Friends, and Big saw the recently updated Elsewhere sound system positively ‘sneaked-out’.

However, one cannot go past such classics as I Love It, Kansas City and 16 when reviewing a Sneaky gig. Connie’s rich vocal delivery, and smooth flow, is only made more bliss by the incredible production and driving force of Angus behind the decks. Ironically, when party-starter UFO was played, only a handful of true regulars smirked and remembered the day Elsewhere was used for filming the UFO music video.

As technology like social media and forums continue to destroy secrecy, the average human is more inquisitive than ever. With the rise of uncontrolled curiosity causing backlash from organizations and promoters, this rare secret show somehow defied the odds. Generating great interest with minimal aid, the final outcome proved favourable and secured a venue for future events. After all, secrets should come out in time.
