Sunday afternoons can mean many different things: doing your washing, cleaning the house, lazing around watching movies, or having a Sunday session listening to one of EDM’s greats; Hernan Cattaneo presented by Auditree at Bar Soma.

There’s something about a Sunday session that always has you waking up on Monday wondering – what happened yesterday? My answer was quite simple: great crowd, fantastic weather and tunes that blew my mind. Born in Buenos Aires DJ/Producer Hernan Cattaneo is one of progressive music’s greats. In the middle of the nineties he became the cultural force of electronic dance music movement that was still in its infancy in his country. His talent was quickly recognised and he soon became a well-known name across the globe. Hernan is wildly known for his Renaissance Master Series productions that were first released in 2005.

I have seen Hernan a few times in Melbourne and wasn’t sure what to expect from his Brisbane gig held at Bar Soma. Getting in was easy enough and purchasing beverages was even easier. We arrived just as Cosmo Cater was finishing up, from what I caught of his set, it was smooth with some deep Progressive beats, a great was to open up for one of the greats. Props to you, Cosmo.

Hernan’s set started off like most of his sets do, slow and deep. I often joke about “the chin scratches” of the EDM world, however I can now see why one would just stop, listen and scratch their chin in deep thought as you listen to the builds ups and drop downs of progressive music. The vibe after the first 45 minutes started to really heave as deeper tunes across deep house, prog and techno were played out in a flawless manner. I’m not too good with track names, however recognised the sounds of Henry Saiz, Guy J and Gui Boratto. His set flowed on nicely as progressive should. The build-up in the last 90 minutes was pure music to my ears. Hernan always manages to make his craft look so effortless and simple.

Having moved up here from Melbourne at the beginning of the year, I have had my reservations about the Brisbane EDM scene, I can now confidently say, that this gig was one of the best I have been to. The crowd was amazing, friendly, massive smiles and clearly a passion and love that was shared in common. I also don’t think I have ever heard a crowd chanting someone’s name before for an encore! “Hernan, Hernan!” filtered through the venue and onto the street as his set came to a close.

A big ups to Auditree for making sure that this gig went ahead – considering the whole Qantas debacle. Thanks to everyone who made it as wonderful as it was. I can’t wait for the next one – see you on the dance floor.
