William Benjamin Bensussen, otherwise known as The Gaslamp Killer, landed on our shores for Stereosonic and also played a more intimate sideshow at Oxford Art Factory.

What Bensussen brought with him was this: an insanely obnoxious, perverse ADHD set dropped by a man who performs like a zombie on hallucinogens.

Walking into the club a little late, I see The Gaslamp Killer is already playing – my first image of him is the silhouette of a manic raver with a mess of flying hair against eye splitting lights flashing upon his back. This casts a vibe akin to a club culture version of Thriller.

This man, despite his dead zombie-like posture, is more alive and kicking than any performer I have ever seen. My eyes could barely keep up with this mans flinching movements, mixed with his crazed track mixing.

Could you call what The Gaslamp Killer was doing “mixing”? Here, we have a man who’s throwing in new tracks whenever he feels like it – sometimes out of time, and often tracks that don’t go together at all. But is he train-wrecking? No. Like a radio DJ who just speed-balled in the toilet cubicle, this man does what he does with style, running what we hear on his terms with rules that implicitly dictate “Fuck what everyone here thinks”. Thankfully, everyone there loved it.

This man talks a lot too – some particularly noteworthy gems to come out of his LA-accented mouth include: “Who here likes LSD? SYDNEY! I KNOW YOU KNOW WHAT IM TALKIN BOUT” and “Tomorrow I gotta play in Melbourne AND Adelaide… in the same DAY! Yeah… I know… what the fuck. But you know what Sydney? I’m gonna keep playing, cause I DON’T GIVE A FUCK!”

Well, that’s one way to make a crowd go wild: and that’s exactly what happened for 2 solid hours as he performed. After the gig, Bensussen went up to the street to sell mix CDs and embrace his fans. The show may have been over, but The Gaslamp Killer’s impression is one that will last.
