Upon entering Sydney’s Civic Underground on February 11, it was clear that the night was going to live up to the intergalactic vibe laid down by the event’s headliner, Space Dimension Controller. What’s more, it was clear that those who attended were ready and willing to become enveloped by what would become a rich wall of cosmic grooves, disco percussion and warm techno.
It was Matt Trousdale’s responsibility to kick off the night and it was his track selection, spanning everything from funky house to deep techno, that sparked the appetite of the now increasing number of avid clubbers. With deft mixing and the superior sound quality of the Underground’s system, the set truly built anticipation of what was to come.
As the crowd continued to grow, so too did the volume as the second of the night, Kali, took over the controls. Playing a well-placed selection of house that continued to promote the relaxed and warm vibe in the room, Kali drawing many out from the booths and onto the dance floor.
It was as the disco grooves of Kali’s closing track faded out that it was the main attraction’s turn to enthral. Jack Hamill, aka Space Dimension Controller, began his set with disco and house tunes, playing many notable favourites as the warm atmosphere continued to bubble, bob and cheer on the selections of the Irishman. It was surely his original material that drew much enthusiasm from the crowd (quite rightly too) as Transatlantic Landing Bay swelled through the system, proving his dominance and confidence as a producer and DJ.
It was the expert blend of techno, space funk (his words) and what can only be described as strange and futuristic sounds that truly made the night memorable. Tired, bemused, relaxed and firmly satisfied, I and many others retired in the early morning – safe in the knowledge that Space Dimension Controller truly knows how to transcend into an out of this world sound.
