Saturday the 11th of February saw the legendary Carl Cox and Eric Powell hit Ivy Pool. While the day may have gotten off to a wet start with the heavens opening up in the late afternoon, the spirits of the crowd at Ivy weren’t dampened – the day proving to be a chilled out and fun affair.
At first, I was little overwhelmed with what Ivy had to offer: between a packed dance floor, people dancing in the pool and the funky house, Balearic and disco beats being vibrated over the airwaves, there was a lot going on. Completing the picture was the typical Ivy crowd, filled with plenty of beautiful people there to party and have a great time.
Carl Cox’s set was not what I’d expected. What I’ve heard lately of his live sets has been techno and a little deep-progressive oriented. But today, the sound of the set had a more house, Balearic, summer feel: exactly what a Sydney summer afternoon should be, providing the perfect soundtrack for the day.
Carl Cox had laid down some of his signature Oh Yes Oh Yes throughout the set, bringing the vibe up to that next level of greatness. Carl had even dropped classics from early and late 90s, with Daft Punk’s Around the World, Moloko’s Sing it Back, Bee Gees You Should Be Dancing, and Ce Ce Peniston’s Finally.
Overall, the event was organized and the security wasn’t as harsh when kicking people out (actually talking to the punters and see how they were doing). More importantly, Carl Cox and Eric Powell had provided the soundtrack for the not-so-great Saturday with luscious Balearic, disco, house sounds; which felt like a pool party in Ibiza or Miami. The only downside was that there was not enough dance floor space – but that’s Ivy for you.
