There is always a nervous tension on the dance floor amongst the punters when they wait for the international DJ to step up to the decks. Everyone tries to get his or her little heli-pad sorted before the major rush for dance floor location begins. I nabbed myself some floor space and then impatiently waited. I personally must have looked at my watch 10 to 15 times whilst waiting for Bexta to make way for the main draw card of the night.

Finally when the clock struck two, a room full of excited punters with cheers, hoots, and hollers warmly welcomed Thomas Schumacher. Schumacher got the ball rolling straight away with some tough sounding techno. He managed to change the mood of the club instantaneously. He drew plenty more people to the floor and picked up the pace of the night.

Receiving a hefty 3-hour set of ‘Bass driven’ techno that got the floor pumping was exactly how I wanted to spend my night. Plenty of ripper tracks were spun and a great variety of sounds were expressed throughout the night. The music varied from the tough punchy techno to that of the more rhythmic & hypnotic.

Best aspect of the night was in-fact the awesome vibe of Plastic. The whole crowd got involved and were really an up for enjoyment bunch of punters. Everyone was spurred on by Schumacher himself due to his energy behind the decks. Schumacher was not only a means of auditory enjoyment, but also a visual one. It was fantastic to see Thomas getting his groove on and loving his job so much. He was constantly punching the air and showing his appreciation for the music by grooving between mixes.

I’d never heard or seen Schumacher live before and was concerned with the possibility that one of my Techno idols might be slightly less than flash. The word around the forums was that his last Sydney effort was not that impressive and there was some discussion before that Thomas Schumacher was not much of a DJ and he should stick to being a quality producer. Whilst I do agree he has definitely produced some of the great all time Techno tracks, (Tek 29, Ficken, Hymn, Schall, etc…) I feel that the rumours regarding his ability to perform as a DJ were properly rectified this time around.

Schumacher in all honestly rawked, it was a Great night and I absolutely loved it. He did make a few slip ups on a couple of mixes, but overall his entertainment factor rated rather highly in my eyes. As a complete package when you take all factors of what makes a DJ great, Schumacher had all bases covered. He was creative, vibrant, and exciting and well worth the effort. I also enjoyed the fact that he took my request for “When I Rock”, and it was loverly to see him sign some signatures for fans. It’s truly always nice to see a performer with such a high respect for the people and scene.
