After the release of J-Jay Hernandez’s “Reflections” on the lovely French label “Distance Records,” I was excited to see what this talented producer would dish up from behind the decks. A guru of deep and funky house, I knew that if he only dropped a few of his own tracks, we would still be in for a very good night.
On arrival there was a small but happy crowd, kicking back and nodding their noggins to Rob K and Fab Anthony. These two did a fine job of warming up the crowd with funk laden house tunes. The punters were all smirks when they dropped Disco Stu’s “An Englishman in Ibiza”. These guys are great at what they do, and although not cutting edge, are two tight and groovy purveyors of dance-floor friendly house. By the end of their set they had filled the initially empty dance floor, with the crowd all primed for the big boy, J-Jay.
The atmosphere became sexually charged as J-Jay mixed up his own quality blend of deep, San Francisco, funky house. His mixes were short but sweet and he kept up interest by moving between tracks fairly rapidly. There were some golden tunes that I would kill to acquire but on the whole most of the tunes were just good booty shaking beats. Nice guitar licks, bongos, garage inspired bass lines and a splashing of well timed vocals featured in his approach. The crowd was bumping and grinding as hard as they could and a more than a few managed to wiggle into each others arms, (a direct result of the sexy tunes, I’m sure!).
‘Twas a very fun night and a pleasant change to hear some good house in this town of ours. Congratulations to the Technique boys – keep the quality nights coming!
