The female toilets at Seven is filled with hairspray, make up and gossip. “I know this sounds like a silly question,” said one girl. “But am I beautiful?” I said, “Listen sweetheart. There are beautiful people here tonight because this is Seven and we are here for funk ‘n’ disco”. And so the beautiful people of Melbourne came out to play with Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley.

A funky disco night was in store in the Lounge Room. Tim Patterson was first up, spinning songs like ‘The Word is Love,’ Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley. Brown organza ruffles on lights, big comfortable couches, secret corners to crawl into and pink lights on disco balls that matched my pink sequence disco pants…it was everything I hoped it would be!

Boogied upstairs for a bit of Luke D’ Angelo and heard ‘Give Me the Night’ and ‘Three Times’. Wow! The last time I heard the disco claps of Three Times was back in ‘89 at Chasers, Funk night on Thursdays. I and many others smile and dance as we all acknowledge that we are in a higher state known as funk ‘n’ disco heaven. A state only achieved by those who still listen to Gloria Gaynor, Hot Chocolate, Edwin Starr and Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley.

I needed a Stella Artois so I hung a few laps and ventured into the Main Room where Mark John and Anthony Larr played disco delights such as ‘Love Fool’ by Jamiroqaui. At this stage the dancing crowd reproduced moves from John Travolta’s famous dance scene in Saturday Night Fever. The room filled as we all waited in anticipation for Hurley.

Seven cheered as Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley took his place in the box and showed everyone the true art of Djing. With smooth, fat, bassy tunes that climbed up and down the walls of Seven, Hurley had the Main Room ‘funking’ hard with Going Back To My Roots, FPI project and What About Us, Brandy.

The dance floor was standing room only as the adoring crowd ‘worshipped’ around the DJ box. Trying to take photos was a challenge until a kind bouncer saw a Cowgirl in distress and led me into the DJ box with ‘Silk.’ Seeing ‘Silk’ work and still manage to shake hands with excited fans and flip vinyl was amazing. Scratches were scratched beautifully. Stops were stopped superbly. At this point in time I felt like I was the luckiest person in the funk ‘n’ disco world. One of the best nights I’ve had in ages.

Here’s to Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley. Scratchin,’ stoppin,’ and flippin’ in his kitchen.
