First things first… I have been a huge fan of Aphrodite for about four years. Aphrodite was my first taste in the world of DnB and I found it ever so sweet. That is why I was not deterred to attend even after I was sideswiped by a car, whilst on my motorbike cruising up William St. Aphrodite is known for his violent, dark, and exciting DnB sound and that’s what I was hoping to hear upon arrival.
To best describe the night I will use a metaphor. I found Aphrodite’s sounds to be like an attractive female screaming at an obese man who’s sticking a butter knife into a 240-volt wall socket. It was at times sexy with vocals, but the majority of the time it was solid rolling beats with heavy electrifying bass-lines that shook the foundations where YU lies. It was also disturbingly dark, exciting and enjoyable to experience.
Through his entire set the mixing was great and the track selection was rather spot on as he varied his style throughout the set to keep everyone engaged. He flowed through intense angry tunes to that of the beautiful and soothing. At no point did he lose the eager crowd, as the room was packed with enough energy to light up 5 city blocks.
During the last 30-60mins of his set Aphrodite begun to spin some of the tracks that many people including myself had come to see. The classic tracks of Aphrodite’s past that made him what he is today, including’ Man of Steel ’,’ Bad Ass’, ‘Stalker’, plus many others no doubt. I was a tad disappointed I didn’t get to hear ‘Rincing Quince – (slider mix)’ as I was hanging out for it all night, but you can’t get it all. Aphrodite also spun his latest tune ‘All Over Me’ plus played many other memorable tunes including ‘Fugee’s -Ready or Not (remix of some sort)’, ‘Shy FX & T Power – Shake U R Body’, and he even threw in a splash of Jungle Brothers to keep the hip-hop massive content.
Fast pasted mixing was shown as Aphrodite appeared to be trying to touch on a large selection of his classic tracks and also familiar tracks to get the audience lapping it up and that they did. The Crowd at YU ate up what Aphrodite was dishing out like mash-potato & gravy with a spoon. Throughout Aphrodite’s set the dance floor never lessened in numbers and emotion. Constant cheers were heard and the air was filled with a few go hardy people showing their respect with the hot flame from their lighters.
MC Fearless did a good job on the microphone, bellowing out to the audience and really connecting and getting a good response. Using plenty of shout outs that got the crowd moving such as “is Sydney the place?”, “When I say Dj, you say…” etc. My only complaint was the dark moaning sounds he occasionally made during the night… some people may have found them enjoyable, but it just made me feel a tad uncomfortable as it sounded like a wounded animal.
Ritual and Alf did an awesome job warming up the crowd, even before Aphrodite took to the stage they had successfully filled the room. Unfortunately I didn’t get to stick around for Matt n Kayla due to injuries, which was a damn shame because they are a great show in themselves. The room did lessen in crowd after Aphrodite left, but that’s to be expected because it was a school night.
Overall Aphrodite impressed me and I had high expectations and was broken… thus he did an awesome job and really rawked Potts Point.
