It’s always a pleasure to go out and see an act from one’s home town, and with a track record of amazing gigs behind them, it was a fairly safe bet that a night out to see Afro Dizzi Act play would be nothing short of awesome, and they certainly didn’t disappoint. Once again the Beats & Peaces crew delivered the goods to a healthily-sized crowd at Bar Broadway for a Sunday night full of funkier-than-thou beats.
Dr Seuss opened the proceedings with a set that yet again proves his consistancy as one of Sydney’s best hip-hop DJs. With a record box full of fresh tracks brought back from Europe, along with some more matured flavours, he delivered his mix full of funky and uplifting tunes and with plenty of his trademark scratching.
Local band Tongue-in-Groove were up next, with a fresh funky sound full of big rolling basslines, many bongo beats and warm analogue synth sounds. The MCing and vocal delivery was a little flat, but they had the tunes and the musical energy to make up for it, and got the punters dancing or at least tapping their feet. ALF delivered a delightful interlude of drum and bass before the boys from Brisbane came on to tear the place apart.
Afro Dizzi Act are billed as “the Resin Dogs’ favourite band” – and it’s not hard to see why. With an energy level that easily matches the Dogs, and a quirky blend of styles that appears to be unique to Brisbane, Afro Dizzi Act belted out an hour and a half of jazzy chunks of big broken beats and quality MCing, much to the delight of the crowd, who cheered every song and demanded an encore at the end – not a bad response for an act playing for the first time in Sydney.
The evening was well rounded out with a lovely breaks set from one of Sydney’s funkiest Djs – TwoUp.
