When you encounter a group of people dedicated to the ideals of really great fucking underground house music, a good venue and cheap drinks to boot you wonder why this little gem isn’t stampeded by the masses but methinks that might be part of it’s appeal.

It was the second outing of Jam The Box and it was nice to be back in Mary St, the crowd were super friendly and as with last month it seemed like everyone knew everyone. The champagne was flowing freely and the tunes were being laid down thick and funky by the very talented Venturian as we walked in, people were already enjoying the fuck-off sound system and partying like it was 1999.

You know a great system when although the music is loud but yet you can still have a conversation with someone and actually understand what they are saying, the sound is that good – think the Mad Racket system.

Now Friday was always going to be Jool’s night, the ‘other’ jolly fat man whipped up the dance floor with a selection of the deepest yet jackin’ and funked up stuff I’ve heard from the man, truly underground tunes with bite, substance and most of all quality. His years of experience really shone, his faultless mixing and energetic style had most people talking for the rest of the night. Some of my faves were ‘Squaredancing in a roundhouse’ by Derrick Carter and the newie from Onionz and Joeski off Tango (Trainspotters anyone??).

Some comments were made that the venue looked a bit bare and needed some kind of decorations or something to jazz it up a bit, but personally I like the feel of the place.

A few games of pool and cheap drinks with your mates before a no-nonsense boogie to cutting edge tunes you won’t here in the more commercial house clubs like Tank.

Well I can hardly wait for the next instalment but ‘shhhh!’ don’t go tell anyone about Jam The Box, it’s Sydney’s best kept house music secret!
